Technique

I started using DE razors about 11 years ago, the first razor I had was a Gillette Tech aluminium spiral handle from the 50s or 60s.

I didn't think much of it and went on to own various vintage Gillettes, Yaqi, Fatip and Razorocks, I finally thought I had found perfection with a Henson al13++.

All was going well until I had an urge to get a vintage razor, so you guessed it I bought a Gillette Tech aluminium spiral handle.

It shaves like a dream, better than the Henson, better than anything i have ever used.

My conclusion is that 11 years ago my technique and or prep. wasn't that great, makes me wonder about razors I had in the early days, I was so sure they were crap but it turns out it was the operator.

Techique and prep. it seems to me are the key to good shaves, not so much the razor or blade.

I don't think there is any question that without proper technique nothing else matters much. Prep and technique should get you a pretty good shave with any functional razor and blade.

But I also believe that the best shave comes from a marriage of the right blade for your razor, face/beard and technique. I also believe that there are a handful of razor/blade combinations available that will take you to another level of comfort and efficiency to complete that marriage. I don't think it necessarily needs to be a great razor (although the quality and consistency might make the search easier), just a great match to your face/beard and technique.

But it all starts with good technique.

You have expressed it better than I could.

It took me about a year to really develop my technique to have drama-free shaves.
