Anyone have or used a Maxard straight ?
I picked up this 6/8 Maxard from an antique shop for $24.00 . Scales are in nice shape and good pins . Razor has almost no honing marks . The edge was totally ruined as not to cut anyone . Previous owner probably ran it on a brick to remove the edge for selling slash liability reasons .
Anyway it "looks" to be stainless steel , don't know for sure . Only had some minimal surface rust on the tang that I easliy removed with MAAS .
I spent maybe 5 minutes with my Arkansas soft (medium 600 grit) and maybe one minute on the Arkansas hard white (fine 1000 grit) . This sucker pops hairs like no other razor I've seen . And finally , it shaves like it has a flame in front of the edge . Really sharp and comfortable shaves . Very impressed with this razor and the steel .
Now that makes me wonder . If you remove the bevel which takes the edge with it , and start all over with a new bevel , this process removes any substandard prior honing and starts the razor off fresh .
Does this explain why this Maxard is such a superstar ? Or is this some really high grade steel ? Seems like on the razors I set new bevels on the edge is much better .
BTW this Maxard smokes my W&B , Boker , Dovo and Henckle Friodour razors . Those are all good "shaving" razors but this Maxard is a stand out in a crowd of giants . Best $24.00 I spent on shaving products .
