Mattress to buy?

I am looking at a Sleep to Live or a Stearns and Foster.
Does anyone know about the quality of these mattress brands?
Any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Robert

Mattresses are a tough call as brand names will vary in quality and price from store to store. If you find something you like with a decent warranty from a seller who doesn't annoy you too much, start negotiating at half of whatever they're charging and you should be in good shape.

I went to the store and tried out a few tempurpedics. The one I got cost about $3000, but a less expensive one felt fine to me--this was the one my wife liked, of course. Best mattess I have ever had. I figure if it lasts 20 years, i got my money's worth.

We ended up around the same price. I liked one of the cheaper ones better but my GF liked this one and it sleeps damn good so i didn't mind.

My parents bought a sleep number about a year ago from QVC and seem to really like it. With their old mattress, my dad used to complain all the time that it was very uncomfortable. Turns out it was the box spring that made the old bed so bad. Putting the mattress on the floor made it much better.

They will negotiate.

We got a mattress for my mother just this Sunday. We were offered a decent sale price on a good Stearns and Foster (twin) for about $800. This was after the sale had officially ended -- we just asked for a better price. We then went to a competing store that had a Simmons on sale for $600 with free delivery (marked down from $880 + delivery). It wasn't quite as nice as the S&F but I called the first store and asked how close they could come. They came down another $100.

We ended up with the cheaper one anyway but the point is, the first place did come down from their "final" price with a little pressure.

IKEA has a mattress selection guide online. This will help you sort out the basics.

IKEA's prices are pretty good for their higher-end mattresses. I suspect (but I have no proof) that their memory-foam mattresses are made for them by Tempurpedic, since they are both Swedish companies.

Once you get a good idea of what to shop for by using this guide, you can also get some good prices at warehouse stores like Costco or BJ's or Sam's Club. Even if you have to pony up $50 or so for a club membership there, you will still be saving money in the long run.

I have an generic Tempurpedic. It was an online purchase directly from a foam factory in N. or S. Carolina, I think. It came in two boxes on a UPS truck. The base foam was vac. sealed in one box and the memory foam was vac. sealed in the other box. We unpacked the boxes, let the foam breath from morning until about dinner time. At that point the foam had expanded back to its original size. We laid out the velveteen mattress cover that came with it, put the base foam down, put he memory foam on top, zipped up the cover and were good to go. The two peices of foam have never shifted, they stick together as if they were glued. We've slept on it every night for four years now and it remains as new and incredibly comfortable.

The exact same Tempurpedic was about $3K, this bed was under $1K, and I cannot tell the difference when I lay on a Tempurpedic. I'll bet they're even cheaper now.

Just something to think about if you're considering the Memory Foam route. If you want, PM me and I'll see if I can dig up the name of the company I bought it from. They were great to work with and it really is a nice product.

The Original Mattress Factory got the highest score of all mattress stores from Consumer Reports, in categories of Service, Selection and Price.

They were second rated (only 2 points below Tempurpedic) in terms of brand quality. And their prices are 1/3 of what Tempurpedic charges.

Unfortunately, they do not do online orders. And they appear not to make memory foam mattresses. But their box-spring products are rated top-notch.
