What's new

Materialism. Rampant, unchecked materialism.

Hey, at least I admit it. I love stuff. I want stuff. I have stuff, but that stuff isn't shiny anymore and I want new stuff. There are too many:

razors
watches
sunglasses
shoes
shaving brushes
leather jackets
dress boots
hats
pocket knives
fountain pens
fragrances
briefcases

out there that look wonderful, and I'm sure if I could just buy them I'd be happy... for a while. And yeah, I'm the guy who created a thread criticizing "gentlemanly indulgences" yesterday. See how torn I am? I recognize that it's an unattractive personality trait, but I can't help it! I looked through a GQ magazine at the library yesterday and had to put it back on the shelf in disgust. I left the library wanting ten things I had previously never heard of.

At least I'm safe spending my spare time here on B&B, right?

Right??

We all go through periods where our self conscious suffers bouts of cognitive dissonance. I have found selling something usually helps...
...making the next purchase easier.

Do you enjoy fine tobacco?

I love looking at pipes, but that's about as far as it goes. If I didn't have such an aversion to smoking (I quit smoking cigarettes 10 years ago), pipes and tobacco would definitely be on the list in my first post. I even had a few pipes from cupojoes.com bookmarked at one point.

If you think it might lead back to smoking cigs then you are wise to stay away.

I don't want much.

Jessica Alba
A politician and a half dozen cops (This is New Orleans, after all)
A solid gold, magic refrigerator that never runs out of beer
The Bahamas. All of it.
A really good double bacon avocado cheeseburger with grilled onions. Every day.
Every single bottle of tawny port in the world that is over 60 years old.

Did you have the ABC burger at the Uptown Martin's Wine Cellar before Katrina? Magic.

No. I favor Bud's Broiler. Or Port O' Call when there is no line to get in. Or the one pounder at Yo Mama's. Or the stuffed burgers at Juicy Lucy's. Before Katrina, the massive burgers cooked under hubcaps at Clover Grill... place is not the same without Big Girl Earl holding court and is not worth a visit because the food sucks now. Quartermaster Deli does a good burger and it is like fast food cheap. They do good and cheap po-boys, too. Deja Vu does good charbroiled burgers but the service depends on whether the wait staff is high or not. Then there is Landry's, near my boat. I always have them add a softshell crab on top of the patty, and extra bacon. My favorite burger though is the one I make, on my Magma kettle grill on my boat. I add 25% Jimmy Dean sausage. VERY tasty! I slice onion extra thick and cook it for a minute on the grill alongside the burger. MMMMMmmmm.

I don't see guns on that list.

You're right. How foolish of me. While I'm making revisions, let me get a few more in that I somehow missed the first time:

guns
bourbon (all of it)
scotch (Islay single malts - all of them)
beer (all of it except for macrobrews)
selvedge denim
Harris tweed

A man true to my on heart. Much to my wife's dismay, I also crave most of the things you listed. I do however have a penchant for more vintage things. Don't want "shiny" (unless my efforts make it so). I want things that have been used and built to last. One of my favorite places in town is TimeKeepers on Olive. Love to look at pocket watches and Rolexes.

Nope, we're exactly the same. I love vintage too, and I love the increasingly rare made in U.S.A. products. I only use the term "shiny" to describe things that are new to me even if not necessarily new in the strict sense (e.g. I love my shiny new Gillette no. 66 Aristocrat).

I love Bud's. #3 with onions, #7 with onions, fries and a Barqs please.
