Martin De Candre different soaps - questions please hlep

Hi - before I pull the trigger I just had a question -

1. The soap I get - is there anything to loose by grating it and putting in a different container of my choice?

2. can someone help me understand the differences between the soaps in terms of weigh?

This website is terrible. The 200 ML jar is the most popular for the MDC and 50ML is very expensive by comparison. Most products like this come in containers that are 150 - 200 ML. There is nothing that I could find regarding what each different scent is like. So, it is a roll of the dice with very expensive shipping and a website that is jumbled up even in languages and no regard for currency changes from my experience.

Suggestion : Just get the brain bowl.

Smells great (Lavender) and is the best value.

Looks pretty nifty too.

The soap is very malleable and you can just cut out a section from the jar and press it into whatever container you want. It is firmer than Cella but not a hard soap by any means, no need to grate at all.

Unless you want the expensive-but-decorative bowl as recommended I would suggest just getting the 200 gram jar and transferring some to whatever container you had in mind.

I just recently got my 200 gram jar. Used it 3 times so far and has hardly any missing it seems like. Wish I would have gotten the brain bowl tho. Get the brain bowl if mostly keeping at the house or the 200 gram jar if you plan on going on trips or something of that nature because it comes with a nice lid. This stuff is A+ shaving soap guys!

The brain bowl is a better value compared to the 200g glass jar with the lid? I would've never guessed that. The website makes it a bit hard to do the math..... with the currency conversion and shipping costs and all that.

No. The brain bowl is 230 grams for 59 euros and the jar is 200 grams for 39.50 euros. Shipping is the same at that weight.

Non-EU orders don't pay VAT, so a 200g jar is 33.03 EUR and the brain bowl is 49.33 EUR.

I recently ordered the 200g jar, and with shipping it came out to 33.03 EUR + 18.80 EUR = 51.83 EUR. Turns out that is something like ~67 USD. I did get a nice sample of the fougere shaving soap with it too :)

But yes, the brain bowl isn't the best value for the soap alone. The bowl adds a lot to the price. The 200g soap does come in a very nice and heavy jar, I think the total weight is > 500g.

Good point, I forgot to log in so I didn't get the VAT taken off. Or the discount if you register, but the differential between the 200 and 230 grams stay the same as you point out.

I would say before pulling the trigger on an overpriced soap to do a little research of comparable (if not much better) soaps. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket then go for it. Smells great. TOOOO many artisan soaps out perform MDC. A helluva lot cheaper to boot. I own 4 jars of MDC and regret 75% of that. Fine soap but a waste of money unless you have money to blow. If you do.....go for it!

That's because those are not different scents; they're all the same classic MdC scent. The different names depict the different packaging options, or as in MdC's case, the glass bowls.

Ya my bad. I was not trying to say the brain bowl was a better value at all. In fact I hadnt even checked the price of how much it cost. i didnt know it was 20 euros more expensive. Glass bowl FTW ;)

There are three scents-Original, Fougere and (not really a scent) unscented.
Fougere will be back in stock tomorrow.

if you didn't like it or thought it was overpriced, why do you have 4 jars? sounds like you are happy with 25% of them, which would be 1. :wink2:

Would you recommend what soaps would be better than MDC...thanks ? :confused1

I was a bit skeptical about the claims about MdC, until I received it :)

It's really up there in terms of performance. It's shocking how little product it takes to create enough lather, this soap should last *years* in my rotation of soaps. I've used it 6 times now, and visually the soap hasn't even perceptually receded into the jar. Although the scent can be a turnoff for some, its quite complex. I was kind of disappointed with the scent when I first opened it up, but it's grown on me. It's definitely not one of my favorites scents though, I'm still undecided whether I'll order the scented version again.

First two are 60 grams. Last one is 130 grams. If you set the language to French the weight is displayed.

Thanks, while I registered there was a problem getting the website to change my address to USA, not France, and other things. It corrected after logging in the next day
