Lucite restores

I picked up a nice lucite brush (made-rite 62) for a couple bucks. I have looked at a couple threads on here, but wondered if anyone else has ventured down this road. I have removed the old knot with a drill & very small chisel, and cleaned out the well with a small wire wheel. Just wondered any experiences people have had with redoing the knot well. Specifically, if you have had problems with epoxies stripping paint, what paints or adhesives you used, things you learned... As of now I am planning on cutting the epoxy with paint and filling the entire well.

Yes...I had all those problems LOL My biggest faux pas was too much Acetone, trying to clean the old paint out. It bubbled and crazed the inside of the cavity to where I couldn't get it polished smooth enough to make a good job of it. The brush I redid was a smallish one and the knot was a 18mm silvertip badger from TGN. When I filled the cavity with epoxy and put the knot in, it trapped an air pocket under the knot which kept pushing the knot out. Luckily for me there was a pill packet lying on the counter, the blister pack kind with the foil back. I tore off a piece of foil, slipped it in the cavity first (one end sticking out) pushed the knot in again. The foil was enough gap to let the air bleed out then I simply pulled the foil out.
The handle is pretty ugly but I love how the brush works! $IMG_20130318_172935.jpg$IMG_20130318_174013.jpg

I have it pretty well cleaned out, I just want to be sure I get the process of refilling it right. I don't want to have to scrape all that stuff out again or have the coloring come out looking bobo...

Nice work it polished up nicely!
I worked on a lucite recently and used Testors enamel to paint the hole. Haven't had any problems with the paint pulling or wrinkling. Just make sure that the paint is fully cured before you try to do anything to it, I waited a week after painting before I epoxied the knot.

Before you paint the hole make sure it is smooth and free of all scratches; if not the paint will "magnify" them.

What epoxy did you use?

Devcon 5 minute epoxy. Its a two part epoxy that you dispense in equal parts and mix together with a popsicle stick. I applied a little epoxy to the bottom of hole and to the bottom of the glue plug on the knot, put them together and let it sit over night.

Paint the inside. Let it dry fully. Then mix a couple of drops of paint in with the epoxy and try to fill the recess with the tinted epoxy without it spilling out the top. You did a nice job with the polishing! I really like my MR 62!
