some;/many of those lurkers are probably web-bots for search engines.

Some of them *could* be LOL Cats surfing the interwebs.
Is this real? do we have this many lurkers hanging around, or is this some sort of glitch ?

I noticed that at about the same time. I would refresh the main page, and the numbers would jump by about 30-40. I saw it climb from 400 to 800 or so.
It was either a glitch, or we got some incoming traffic from Gawker or something.

Possibly. I lurked here for awhile before RAD bit and I got involved. Just reading the excellent posts and information here got me pretty far along the path with a Fatboy and a puck of Cade before the Den began to grow. Hopefully, there are a bunch of others doing the same.
It might be that some regular members just aren't signed in, but reading from work, etc. But those numbers are pretty high!
I was a long time lurker before I joined. Many folks just peruse the board for information and want nothing else.
I never see the point of just lurking on a forum. If the forum seems to be busy and vibrant enough I just jump right in.
