losing out on ebay auctions

i've lost 3 in a row in the past 2 days and I can honestly say that it doesn't bother me. if I happen to win it's a bonus for me but knowing there's an abundance of safety razors to be had keeps me watching. any of you get totally bummed out when you lose an auction or do you think, "oh well, better luck next time"? I'm the latter. even though I only have 8 safety razors I've never really thought of acquiring a holy grail that I absolutely had to have....if I did i'd be broke pretty fast.

I like to think i'm practical about my ebay purchases. 1 safety razor is enough but having 8 is more than enough for my shaving needs. I guess i'm unwilling to pay over a certain $ amount which is why i've lost out. the market is flooded with safety razors and usually after losing an auction I always see the same one being sold by another seller, so it just gives me another opportunity to try and win it.

It doesn't bother me either to lose an auction. It might have when I first started but now I just set my limit and if it goes above that so be it. Also I only bid on open comb razors and non-Gillette makes now so there's less competition and the prices don't go so high.

Yep, I'm with you.
They made millions of these things. Eventually what I want will show up at the right price.

Yea. I used to get reeeeally annoyed, but now I have most of the razors I want, so itsnot too bad. I have lost like 3 bulldogs and I just forgot about the one that an hour ago sold! Losing those has really started to **** me off
On most items though, not a huge deal
Just a message to fellow B&Bers, PLEASE don't go around bidding on items with a buncha days left. I hate that people do this. It's truly senseless, because there's NO chance the bid you place on a desirable razor with more than a minute left in the auction willgetyou the razor. I hate to see this because it just drives prices way up and its totally mindless and honestly stupid and grudging behavior to get stuck in a bidding war that drivesprices to insane levels when there's a lot of time on an auction
Sorry if you're offended, but it's true. Those early bids ONLY serve to take prices up higher than they need to be and they may win some common SS, but they'll never ever ever help you on a simpson's brush, or a toggle or something like that
Again, sorry if I offend you. This type of behavior annoys me much more than losing auctions

The ONLY exception to the above is if you're planning to put an outrageously high max bid. If it's high enough, then you'll win the item even if you bid early.
But people don't do that. They keep placing incrementally bigger bids that start tiny, and only drive up prices. If you place a huge bid that you're guaranteed to win with, you hurt no one. If you place a buncha tiny bids, you drive prices up until they are unaffordable to most. See the difference? The big bidder would win anyway late or early. The many tiny bids bidder drives prices up higher than they need to be, and then loses, forcing others to pay more.

When it comes to just about any eBay auction, I go to esnipe.com, type in the maximum amount I'd spend and forget about it. It keeps me from getting swept up in the last-minute bidding frenzy. Sure, I lose out sometimes. But in the end, I'm better off.

I am the guy that places all the early bits to drive up the prices.. it makes all my razors worth more:biggrin:

the worst is when something goes for far less than you would have paid for it, but you didnt bid because you thought it would go way higher than it did

I don't know. I've got a SS and have been wanting to pick up a Ladies Gillette. I've been pretty bummed the last couple of days to have been outbid twice at the very last minute by people lurking and waiting to get it just a touch higher than the last bid. Frankly, I kind of wish people wouldn't wait until the last minute to try to steal something for which I'd have gladly paid an additional dollar or two. Maybe bidding smaller amounts along the way with a few days left makes prices go up, but at least it gives people a chance to decide what they are willing to spend on something and to put out their bid without it being snatched at the last second.

but that's all part of the game. you can't really fault someone whose willing to pay more for an item than you are

If you got beat by a dollar you probably got sniped. The thing is you don't know how high the sniper was willing to go....

Actually Brian the highest bid most likely was much higher then the winning bid. If you bid $50 on something and someone else bids $65, the winning bid will be $51. If you are willing to pay more for an item, then you have to bid higher. As far as getting a Lady Gillette goes you should know what the going price is and bid accordingly.

Do you mean to tell me that 'bay works some other way? I would say that 90% of the auctions I've been involved in or watched ended like this. Grabbed a 40's SS the other day for <$9 shipped, price was set with 22 sec left on the clock. Honestly, I don't see that many auctions where an unrealistic price is set early on. Sometimes I will place a minimal bid with days left just to have the email link.

If you want an item and MUST bid early, I just say set a high price. If you do, it'll go to you and that's that. If you keep pushing it up in little increments before the last minute, you'll push up the price and probably lose in the end.
Two roads work basically. Bid high and early. Bid way late and at a reasonable price. This business of bidding just that extra dollar with one day left will never get anyone anywhere. It just takes prices up

Have you looked at 30's Aristocrats, Red Tips, Aristocrats, etc. lately? That's always what happens.

+1. I always put in my max bid in the closing seconds of the auction.

If there is something I really want on ebay I use esnipe with the max bid I am willing to pay. If I lose, it does not matter to me since it went for more than I was willing to pay or what I think it is worth. When I started wet shaving I used my dad's old Fatboy decided it would be my sole razor, so of course I figured might as well have a couple of backups. Ended up buying 5 on ebay. After RAD kicked in, sold 3 of them back on ebay for more than I paid. Now I'm on a Gillette New kick so have 3 of them that are user grade. Fortunately I buy razors to use, so collecting each vintage Gillette is not something that appeals to me.
