Looking for some feedback

I'm really a big fan of how the color and the water droplets in this picture came out. I also think it cropped well with the two leaves on either side. My only thing is I feel like the flower is a little off center to the right, although I may just be a little OCD with that one. Any comments or suggestions?

I take a lot of pictures of roses, so I've have had lots of time to think about shots like this one. First of all, it's terrific. I like getting shots of fully bloomed flowers with buds in the background. But here are a few suggestions. You might want to try the same shot with more depth of field, so that the leaves and the water on them will be a little more in focus. Also, you might try shots where the main point of interest--the one bloomed flower--is way off center. The cliche of the rule of thirds really works. This shot could have had the flower at the same level vertically, but in the left third of the frame instead of the middle. The flower could be the only thing in sharp focus. Of course, you'd have to be careful and lucky about what would be in the rest of the frame.

Here's a so-so example of off-centered framing.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. It's amazing how many shots of the "same thing" you can take and only like one. Then it's almost like the longer you look at the picture, the more things you think you could do a little different.

I like the DOF of the flower itself, but I find the leaves and the buds distracting. If you have PS (or some other reasonably powerful editing S/W), I'd be tempted to cut the flower out and drop it on a black background. I think it would be striking. Don't be afraid to stage your shots a bit. I've sprayed flowers like this lightly with a spray bottle. It gives you a few more nice plump water droplets to look at.

Happy shooting.

Great suggestion about cutting the flower. The flower, itself, is perfect. Also, I've read, but haven't tried, spraying plants with glycerine. It's clear like water, doesn't dry off, and creates more-perfect droplets.

I would say that the rose is already in the right hand third of the frame, nice shot and the dof works for me

Yeah, I've never used glycerin myself, but I have heard the surface tension is better so it makes better droplettes. I think you're right about them not drying out as easily either. I'm pretty sure they use glycerine in advertising shots.

hi hope you dont mind, but i jacked your photo and did some cropping.. and a little color pop..

i will delete if you do not approve.

Nice! The background no longer distracts me, and it has brought meaning to the buds in the foreground. It actually gives your eyes a place to wonder. And the original excellence of the rose has been preserved. Nice edit.

Nice result!

I was about to mention the background. It was in the middle, not blurred enough, yet not sharp enough to see the water drops.

I like the final result.

Overall really nice composition (for both, before and after croping).

i like the original pretty well.. i think the flower really stood out.. but the leaves were a bit distracting.. i wouldnt say its a final edit, that would be on the original poster of the photo... this is just a side tract in a direction i personally like.. i hope the OP dont mind me messing with his work...

So, JazzMan, what do you like about the smell of Proraso in the morning? Does it remind you of victory?

Victory? Why, yes. Just ask the whiskers! (And whiskers don't surf.)

But back to the yellow rose, that second version really shows you what you can do when you start with such a nice image.

Heh, forgot to read my own thread. That edit looks really cool, thanks for posting that! I just downloaded Photoshop, so I will start learning how to do such things.

I think its avery nice pic.Makes the saying,"Just stop and smell the roses!" come to my mind:smile:
