Looking for info on Alum Bars

Hey there everyone, I was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a good thread on Alum Bars, I am looking for general info on them and how they might compare to a Hydrosol.

I actually have the "shards" purchased from an indian "spice house". they are Potassium Alum and sell for $.99 for a pretty good sized bag. I bought 2 bags for some unknown reason & now it seems I'll have Alum forever. Tell you what, PM me your shipping info & I'll PIF you a shard & you can draw your own conclusions.

For a current price reference, I bought a block at my neighborhood Indian grocery store a month or so ago. Still $.99. I'm sure that my great grandchildren will still be rubbing it over their chops long after I'm gone.

I'd be happy to stop and get some for you, but it would take a week or so to get over to the store. Also, I don't know if it is ammonium alum or potassium alum.

Thanks very much for the offer, but I was actually just given a probably very similar bag of shards by an indian friend of mine. I was just wondering about the properties of the alum. Thanks for all the info though, it was very helpful.
