What's new

Looking for an adjustable TTO

Does anyone know of any current production twist to open adjustable Safety Razors?

I know there are some older gillettes like the Fatboy, but I'f I'm going to spend 50 or more on one of those, I'd much rather spend twice that on one that is brand new, and clean with a warranty.

I just can't seem to find any.

Why would you need a warrantly on a fatboy? They've already worked for 50 years without a hiccup. :D

How about spending 20 and getting a slim or a super adjustable? Would that make it a reasonable amount?

For reference, the vision is about 140.

True, as far as $ is concerned a vintage adjustable is a clear winner. I would go for the vintage, but I'm a little more cheap like that.

I've seen it. It doesn't appeal to me with its aesthetics. Also, I saw where someone mentioned it has a larger then normal head and I'm not sure that I like that. I have a portion of my head that requires a thinner head to shave into the crevice.

I can't seem to find any others either.

What?

I can't think of anything else that's new, unless you want NOS gillettes. The super adjustable has a pretty low profile and should fit wherever you need it to.

Just a quick question: Is there any specific reason you want an adjustable and TTO razor? I only ask because there are 2 models of current production Merkur adjustable razors that aren't TTO, the Futur and Progress. If you're inclined to get an adjustable and TTO razor, it does look like you'll have to go vintage I'm afraid.

I was worried about the "used" thing myself, until I realized just how well-built these things are, and that metal can be cleaned really really well. (I cannot imagine buying a used brush, though...just gives me the willies)

Another option is to buy a mechanically sound razor that has a lot of brassing (I'd start with BST's WTB forum) and have it replated. In that case the outside of the razor literally would be new.

Just buy a slim. They are cheap, most are still working exactly the same as when new, some still look like new even though they are 50 years old.
Nobody could make them at that quality at a reasonable price these days. Even good quality non adjustable, non TTO razors cost a lot more than what a vintage slim adjustable costs.

+1. I just received this one and it cleaned up like new after investing maybe 10 minutes total. Built like a tank and will last for decades.

Not to pile on, but everybody is a little skeezed out by using a "used" razor at first...but then you realize how easy it is to clean them up and it's no problem. (I worry more about the silverware at restaurants now.)

As somebody said, you can get a finish-worn example replated if it bothers you, and STILL have less than invested than a $140 Merkur.

An old Gillette slim or fatboy will last another fifty years with no problem. They still give good shaves, and are better made than the newer razors. Honest.

If you want adjustable and TTO, they're the only way to fly.

PS I bought my first fatboy for about $35 on the BST and it is in excellent condition. My slim was purchased in an antique store for $7 and it is in slightly nicer condition. They exhibit INCREDIBLE quality for those prices, not possible in today's economy/marketplace.

I want an Auto for flexibility, I'm still new to DE but that doesn't mean I can't try things, or even think ahead. There is also a strange attraction to the TTO design that appeals to me. I've allready sent messages to Mer about upgrading a progress for me.

I'm sure alot of people are apprehensive about something as personal as a used razor. I'm not collecting it, I want to use it, I just prefer my items to be pristine so I can care for them how I see fit. I'll look into restoration as a possiblitiy, but I was hoping to just spend the total amount of money required to buy and restore on a new product.

That makes a great argument for purchasing an old razor. Very nice.

Yep, if you're patient, really nice clean razors show up for decent prices on Ebay. But keep an eye on BST or post your wants in the WTB forum...you shouldn't have to spend more than 25-30 bucks for a very nice Slim or Super Adjustable.

Not only that, but IF they were to break, they're so simple they're cheap and easy to fix.

+2. Get a SLIM!

Definitely go for a vintage, they are way cooler than new razors IMO. I have a DE89 but I doubt if I will ever buy another new razor. Only vintage for me since that first purchase. You can get a nice Slim on the B/S/T for around $20.

He can put a nice knob on the end, but he can't turn it into a TTO.:w00t:
