What's new

Let's Start a Buzz Cut/Crew Cut Thread!

I think these are popular enough that a thread should be dedicated to them! I recently, at 44, got my first ever crew cut and love it! I wish I hadn't waited so long. Granted, they're not for everyone, but they're cool and comfy, your hair can't get messed up, no gel, creams, combs or brushes needed, a small amount of Ivory bar soap is all it takes to wash it. After 2 cuts, your clipper is paid for!! If you have thinning or receding hair, it looks a LOT better to just buzz it rather than try a "comb-over" or cover it some other way-----you're not fooling anyone! It's very simple and literally fool-proof to cut your own hair this way.

I bought a Wahl Clipper kit with a nice case and several "depth gages" at Wal-Mart on my way home from the barber after my first buzz and have done it myself with great results several times since! After less than 2 haircuts, it's paid for itself!

Try it! If you don't like it, it'll grow back (probably) Just for the record, I started with a #4 on top and a #2 on the sides, but now I use a #2 everywhere and love it. I don't consider myself anything special in the looks department, but I've never got so many compliments-----from both sexes----on a haircut before! The icing on the cake!

I got a flat top at the ripe age of 33 a few years ago. I loved it, but the Mrs. still hasn't forgiven me.

Might have to go for it again.

Been wanting to get a flat top for years, please post some pics. I have always had the traditional Buisness cut, tappered in back and sides.

I have had long hair for over 20 years. My wife just buzzed my hair two days ago and I really an starting to like it !! I now use 1 drop of shampoo and no more conditioner. I have been told I now look 10 years younger. I dont have to comb it anymore and the best part of it all is my wife likes it so much she cannot keep her hands off of me !! Eventually I will have to change my photo for the group !!

I was thinking of trying the #1 on the sides and back, but going from a #2 to a #1 is a big jump once you get that short. Maybe I'll try a #1 with a little extra from the "depth lever" thrown in to be safe. I like a #2 on the top, but if and when my hair starts getting thinner, I'll go shorter. I think the shape of my head is better suited for a plain buzz cut rather than a flat-top, so that's what I do.

As a side note, I've never been a cap/hat wearer-----just don't like wearing them------so I found some Banana Boat "Skin & Scalp" sunscreen at the drugstore which is made for this purpose. It's water/sweat-resistant and seems to work very well! It's liquid and leaves no white residue.

I've had a crewcut for several years now and wish I had done it sooner. Great in summer to just wipe of any sweat from being outside and it's easy to dry off after a shower.
Heck it's cooler as well:)

I remember a few summers ago, I told my hairstylist:" today you decide what we go with; you will go with what you think looks best on me "

So he went with a buzz cut; at 1st, I thought it didn't look good on me: I was pissed I told him: " *** ??? "

Actually, I got a LOT off success with beautiful women, thanks to that buzzcut

The very next morning, I ran into my hairstylist, and I told him: " Thanks a lot !!! "

welcome to the military boys. :w00t:

No guard all the way around. A little shorter with the adjustment blade on the sides than the top (per regulations). Do it every week and a half or so and never go back. Cheap and easy are the answers, plus it hides the grey, at least for the time being.

So he got out a paper bag and cut some eye holes in it. I thought it didn't look good on me: I was pissed I told him: " *** ??? "

Actually, I got a LOT off success with below average women, thanks to that paper bag.

This is what I've been telling my stylists for years ... they're the pros, so I let them decide what will be the best look based on the shape of my head and the texture of my hair.

The only instructions I give them is that I want something that is comfortable and low maintenance. I'm more concerned with function, rather than fashion.

So far, I've resisted the buzz cut look, but all the rave reviews I read hear (particularly the reactions of the opposite sex) are tempting me to try it.

I've had a Level 1 in the warmer months and a Level 2 in the cooler months for about 15 years now, not that I've got a huge amount left to cut. I can honestly say that I haven't brushed my hair in 15 years.

I've been keeping it around a no. 3 on the sides and just a little longer on top. I really like the look, it hides the gray and I love the low maintenance.

The OP said that he got his own clippers, so how hard is it to DIY your own haircut? I've been thinking about picking up a pair of clippers so I can trim up every week or two without having to drop $15-$20 each time. Does anyone else do this?

I use to when I was in high school but I've thought about doing it again to do my kids

Once, before my first wedding. I looked like Drew Carey. Never again. :thumbdown But that's me...I know it works for a lot of guys. Just not this one.

My usual is a 4 on the sides and a 6 on top.

Not quite at close as you guys, but still way easy to do and no maintenance.

I have had many crew cuts over the years 0 all over and once whilst on R&R in Q8 I had a hand cut flat top. The guys I was with thought I looked ridiculous but I loved it. It didn't last long as my hair is wicked curly so just flopped away the second I washed it

I started with a number 1 or 2 guard about 5 years ago. I then went to no guard about 3 or 4 years ago. I keep it pretty short. About every 2 to 3 weeks I give my self a trim. I think the last time I was at a barber was before my wedding, and only because I was in my home town and I use to go to him before I moved.
