What's new

Learned three things about shave soaps today

1. I wasn't adding enough water. Now even my Col Conk's lathers up great!
2. I love my scuttle but it is too small. My $1.50 Wal-Mart salsa bowl works best.
3. Adding Pinaud Bay Rum to melted Col Conk's Bay Rum to give it more fragrance leads to a significant burning sensation!

More water almost always helps the process. Also try face lathering, you will no longer want the bowl once you see the improvement in your shave.

+1 here. I keep a bowl of hot water to dip the brush in. It is much easier to gauge how hydrated the soap is when face lathering is used.

Exactly what I do as well. I fill my brush scuttle and bowl (happens to be a matching lather bowl) with hot water when I start lathering. When I need more water I touch the tips of the brush to the water

keep in mind however, that there are many soaps that actually lather up better using a semi-dry brush. i would definitely put cade and calani in this category. give these soaps too much water at first and what you get is a thin, runny, bubbly mess. that being said, there are soaps with also demand tons of water. the trick is learning which soaps prefer what kind of treatment.
