I got a small 1oz jar of regular Layrite to try. i keep my thinning hair relatively short and even a small dose of Layrite seems to weigh down my hair. I want a water based pomade/cream with minimal shine, mild hold, that would add a little thickness to my hair. Any recoomedations are appreciated.

Have you tried Groom & Clean yet? I use that daily. If you use a lot, you will get some shine, but I use about a pea-sized amount on my hair and it does have minimal shine and mild hold. Not sure about adding thickness, but it does allow you to brush/comb it how you like and will hold it there. It will also wash out easily and is not greasy.
Lucky 13 Swagger may work for you. It's very light and is more of a cream than pomade/gel like Layrite. It doesn't give too much shine either, unless you use it on very damp hair. It smells nice too
