Latest Wood Turned Handles - Olive Wood + African Blackwood [PICS]

Here's the latest leftovers from my sawdust making this weekend! :)

It's REALLY HOT in my garage so I am definitely on a slowdown out there.

One is part olive wood and part african blackwood - my first kick at a multiwood handle! Not perfect - I didn't get the wood joined perfectly square, but I'm happy with it as a first. I like this approach and will be doing more like these - mixing up contrasting wood.

The other is all olive wood with a crimson stained textured band. You should smell freshly shaved olive wood - just awesome!

Both finished with EEE Ultrashine + several layers of Shellawax

Cheers all!

Rob

How hard is the African Blackwood to work with. I have heard it is a very hard wood requiring very strong bits and implements. Is that true?

BTW: The brushes look good, real good!

This is great. They are looking fantastic. I personally like the second one with the crimson stained textured band the most, but both are beautiful.

How long did it take you to craft them?

Cheers,

Erik

Oh yeah - it's the densest wood I have worked with by far! That little band of black wood more than doubles the weight of the entire brush! It looks nice, but I can't say I enjoy making full handles out of it. That's mostly why I used part of it here. I like the contrast it adds, but as a whole handle it's really quite featureless. Too dark to enjoy a grain pattern.

I'd say 2 to 3 hours each total. Maybe a little bit more on the two tone as I had some finish issues with it. Stripped it down and started over again :)

The detail work and color of the crimson texture band are really unique and attractive. Excellent work! Do you just do this as a hobby or do you sell too?

So far mostly hobby, though I have sold a couple handles mainly for acquaintances.

I do plan on making/selling more and maybe opening a web store - just working out the in's and out's of turning and finishing and such. I very much enjoy working on the lathe. My "real" job is as a creative director in the digital world mostly so I love the idea that these handles and turnings don't disappear when the power goes out :) - It's nice to make something real that can be held in the hand!

That Crimson stained band looks incredible. If you could pull off some type of burgundy band i'd be hooked. I love your designs. They remind me of women in the Victorian age who wore tight corsets and had huge rear ends.

Well that certainly explains the Don Draper avatar. Can't wait for you to offer up some of your handles here.
