Kyoku vs. Neutrogena (David vs. Goliath)

Hi all,

A little bit about me so that you can understand the method behind my madness. Since I've been DE shaving, I also became much more aware of skin care and other hygiene products (thanks to B&B members). While it's fun trying different products from different brands, I have to be careful because I'm the type of guy that can go crazy and end up spending thousands if I don't pump the brakes. So in general I like to find something that works and stick to it. I also seem to have a bit of an OCD thing where I like to stick with one brand per category... yes it's big time OCD but it works for me; otherwise I end up trying something new every other day so it's a way for me to control myself.

I've always been prone to ingrown hair and nasty goose eggs two to three times a month right on my neck or my face so I've always been concerned about skin products for my face. Since I switched from cartridge to DE, I've noticed a tremendous improvement and I've also been using better facial cleansers.

I thought I found the brand that I wanted to stick to when I found Menscience. I was using the Daily Face Wash in the morning and the Facial Scrub at night followed by the Advanced Face Lotion. They all have salicylic acid and glycolic acid and they were working perfectly for me. Then I found out they all have parabens and although I'm not overly concerned about chemicals, I figured that there must be other good stuff out there without parabens.

So after a couple of days of reading and researching I've narrowed it down to Neutrogena or Kyoku. With Neutrogena's name and reputation, it seemed like an easy choice. Neutrogena makes a pore refining facial scrub, a pore refining facial cleanser and toner as well as a multivitamin night cream. All of these products are in the $10 range and none of them have parabens. Except for the multivitamin cream, they all have AHA & BHA so it seemed like an easy choice.

Then I read some rave reviews about Kyoku products and I called them. The person I spoke with was very helpful and for $35, I was able to get the facial scrub, facial cleanser, oil free moisturizer, and pore refining night serum. This is a hefty discount to retail and is based on a subscription whereby I get it shipped to my house every 60 days or when it runs out. The thing with Kyoku is that the ingredients are foreign to me (volcanic ash, rice grain, sake, ground beans....). There is no salicylic acid and only the scrub contains AHA. The promise from Koyku is that if I tried it for 60 days and did not love it, I would get a full refund and keep what's left of the product if any.

So, I went ahead and purchased the Kyoku products as well as the Neutrogena products. I'm just trying to see if you gents have any opinions one way or another.

I'm packing my luggage tonight for a one week overseas business trip and I'm trying to decide which line to try first (Neutrogena or Kyoku). What are your thoughts and experiences with these products and with the ingredients in Kyoku vs the traditional BHA and AHA remedies?

Thank you for reading my long winded post and for your responses.

Very well written thread.

After finishing my dreadnought cream plan to purchase Kyoku shave cream since it is highly recommended by certain magazines.

AHA and BHA are face care remedies. Check out this web site for clinical analysis about ingredients and brands: http://www.paulaschoice.com/

Please keep us informed about your comparison.

Thank you for the kind comment and the feedback. I am at the airport now and have decided to pack the Kyoku products. I've got the facial cleanser, facial scrub, night serum and lava masque. I'll try it all for this week and see how it does. I can always get a refund if it doesn't work out. I read through the website you recommended and it's very useful. I see that BHA and AHA are ranked as "Best" with regards to benefits. I know my skin responds very well to those products so I will have to be completely blown away by the performance of Kyoku in order to make the switch. Otherwise, I'll go to Neutrogena because I know its ingredients work for me.
