Knife Re-Handles

I've been doing rehandling work on Japanese western style knives for a few months and learning a lot along the way. A couple of them have turned out better than others with the last ones being the ones I'm most proud of. Here's two of them.....a Togiharu gyuto in Hawaiian signature wood & a MAC gyuto in quilted maple.

Here's a rehandle with blade etching. I had also thinned this knife out considerably (which I won't do again) and it came out great as a result. I really wanted to keep this one.

As a MAC lover, I think those handles transform them from ok to beautiful.

Do most of your customers prefer Western-style handles?

No actually it's about a 50/50 mix. I've been re-handling wa versions for over 3 years now. I install upgrades/customs made by my friend Stefan Keller. You can see Stefan's work here

Jay, here's a close-up of the blade, it really came out wild looking - I was quite surprised.

This is a lovely piece of work. Help me understand a bit. Is the black line around the handle a dark wood like ebony? Does the etching on the blade make the carbon steel portion black?

The black line around the handle scales and bolster are liners, they're used for aesthetics mostly but also serve to fill in irregularities in the tang grinds.

The etchant burns iron in the steel effecting higher carbon steels the greatest so in this knife you see the carbon core turn black while the stainless cladding only turns gray.

Wow, I am speechless. Both of you really are masters of your craft :thumbup1:
You're not just whistling 'Dixie' either. I'm a sucker for beautiful hardwoods.
