What's new

Just ordered an R41

I resisted all I can, but the temptation is just too great. I just ordered this and a puck of TFS tobacco (again, curious) from Bullgoose. I can't wait to see how this goes.

It's a beautiful piece of steel. I've wanted to try one, but I think there is a wee bit much blade showing for me. Someone had said it's fiercer than a Progress set on 5+! That's a lot of blade. But I have to admit, the temptation is there. There are times in life when you have to say FIGMO; and the FIGMO is that I was ordered (by self) to 'just do it'! I hope it works out for you. Either way, it will be an experience that at the very least you can satisfy the draw of the R41. Please post an update after you've tried it--I, for one, will be curious; and do mention what you've been using.

It's a nice DE razor and you should enjoy using it.

It does benefit from a short heavier handle like the iKon or Weber handle.

The one I have is a BRW Bull Mastiff deluxe handled custom

Good luck - I enjoy mine - It takes a little time to get the correct angle but once it is achieved you get the closest shave next to a straight razor.

My wallet cries.
Whoa... from the posts I've read... that looks intimidating. Let us know how it goes?

I'll be honest, I'm a little terrified of it. My fatboy set on 5 is great for me. It's half curiosity and half "do I have what it takes" for me. I want to see what the big deal is.

That's one fine DE razor you're getting. I too would recommend the shorter heavier handle. I found the supplied one to be too long to suit myself. I would say that you should try the razor with the factory handle first before you make any changes though. It might be a good fit for you.

Just do it. I am a DE newb, and I switched to the R41 after 11 shaves. This thing is great. I have had 2 weepers total in 3 shaves, and they both stopped bleeding with just a warm water rinse. It really provides great feedback and is easy to learn on. I find it much easier to use than my Merkur 34c.

Really glad to hear this, as I love my R41, and have a weber handle on the way!

I was also. I would stare at it for several days before I got the mustard to use it. Now, I won't look back or have any desire to use any other razor although the Tradere oc has me thinking :) My advice to you would be not to jump straight into a blade like a Feather or one of the sharper blades until you get an idea of how the 41 feels. I have found out for me so far that blades that tend to be the sharpest do not give me the best shave and blades that are not the smoothest do. Can't explain that but it's true. And I am still getting better shaves than with any other razor I have so go ahead and load up a blade, it might be the best shave you've ever gave yourself ;)

+1000 although I wouldn't recommend the 41 to a first timer I find it so much easier than my r89 or my 23c to shave with. And in actuality the few weepers I have gotten I would blame myself for not paying attention and getting into a rush, which you simply can not do with the r41.

Somehow Phil at Bullgoose used the shipping time warp he usually does and it got to me USPS yesterday (ordered Thursday afternoon). I tried it this morning and it's certainly different. I love the sound of it and my face is definitely smooth, but I do have a little bit of tingle about two hours after my shave. I think it might have something to do with my lather being a bit dry. I can get away with only decent lather with my Fatboy, but that certainly won't work here. Also, I used a new Astra blade, which don't really hit their stride on the second or third shave. I'll keep going with the Astra and concentrate more on my lather and see how it goes. If it's still not great, I have a couple feather blades to try in it. I'm not ready to give up just yet, but I don't know if this will be my go-to razor.

I definitely find a dry lather does not work with the R41. I have also haven't had any luck with a non tallow soap with the R41 yet.

Congrats, you have chosen high quality in both products.
I own both (check my avatar) and am very contempt with them. Should give you many years of joy.
A feather blade takes it to a whole different level, however, it's not for everyone, that combination.

I used a feather this morning and it was better than the Astra, but it's still not for me. I knew I wasn't really an aggressive razor guy before I bought it, but I was just too curious not to try it. I guess I'll be putting it on the BST soon to trade for an old Gillette.

A for effort you have to wonder about the 41 no more!!!

With all the positive praise, I figured I owed it to my DE89 to give it a shot. Now it's time for it to find a home where it will get the type of use it deserves.

Please keep us posted on how it works for you. I have been looking for an OC razor, but all I have read about the R41 is how aggressive it is. Let us know.
