What's new

Just as I thought! (though still hard to believe)

the fact he wasnt making a lather at all!! he was just rubbing cream on his face. might as well have been using toothpaste.
maybe it was just funny to me asking, then having him come back and confirm it. it paints a funny visual i think.

Yeah - he did not get it is best applied with a brush. Although I think Proraso claims you can lather it up by hand I think if memory serves me correctly.

I'm in this camp although I've never used a cream without a brush.

All shaving creams are meant to be used brushless.

The relatively limited number of ones that can also be successfully lathered with a brush is a very small subset.

Honestly, it's not his fault. He had never used the stuff before and he said he went by the directions, which to be honest after going and looking at the tube I have, they kinda suck. It says to use an ample amount on wet hands to make a lather or use a brush. Then apply to face and shave. I tried it a few times to see if I could make a lather in this manner...no luck...feel free to attempt this yourselves and see what it's like. I would love to see the method you're supposed to use to lather this stuff without a brush...anyway all that being said, when I first read this and his review I thought the same thing you did.

I can see how someone that knows nothing about wet shaving could make the mistake. A month ago I didn't know what a shaving brush looked like as all brothers and dad do not use one. Hope he comes here and learns something and meets all of you guys here, I have to say this is the most accepting and helpful forum I have ever come across.

I used proraso without a brush for years before I ever bought a brush or safety razor, and with good results. A man can't be faulted for ignorance. We are the very small minority here, and as our mantra goes, ymmv. Whatever shave is best for him is just fine, but if he does find his shaves lacking we will be here to lend a hand.

I like that this guy was given sound advice after his review. I hope he comes here as well because it sounds like he really cares about his shave; he took the time to review a shave cream!

And if that guy is reading this forum, welcome and dont be shy! With enough reading and study here you will be showing that prorasso who's boss... and kicking that gel and fusion to the curb!

Creams need to be lathered with a brush for two reasons -
1. it stretches the product out, letting you use less for the same results
2. it lets you play with your expensive toys.

Other than that, you can just apply a thin layer of any cream to your face directly. Sounds like the guy in the reviews needed to work on prep and technique, and he probably slathered the cream on thick like you would with a foam.

Hey cosmicdoom I'm kinda curious, all those years you used proraso without a brush were you able to produce a decent lather? After reading this I tried it myself and all I ended up with was a mess. Maybe it's because I don't have a lot of growth daily? Not much stubble to use as a built it brush so to speak? Maybe this guy had a similar situation?

To me he sounds like what I've been calling a "modern shaver" Someone who's dad handed him a can of gunk and a cartridge razor and "taught him" by saying smear that on your face and then drag that around and if you cut yourself stick some TP on it...basically how I was taught(perhaps the down side to having a dad with a beard?). Seems sad that so many people have lost this tradition for the "new" "better" way.

It seems ignorance is not always bliss...

Hand slathering probably won't deliver the rich lather we're used to, but a slather of cream with a liberal massage of water will give you a nice slick coating to work with. Frankly, if you really like the cooling of Proraso, this gives the maximum effect.

well, he did buy the cream because of the reviews. he also took the time to post his own review. its just a shame he was not using properly. i can only assume he took the advice and is now getting a fantastic lather and shave.
i also told him about the guys here on this site so,,,, if he needs anything more, he does know where to go.:wink2:
