Jicky vs. Mouchoir de Monsieur

I haven't tried MdM, so I can't comment on the comparison. I'm not a fan of Jicky. Too much civet and powder for my taste, but I know that it has a pretty big following and I'm in the minority camp.

When I first tried them, Jicky was a nice Lavender - Vanilla fragrance but didn't blow me away. MdM haunted my dreams and I tracked down a bottle. In a thread a few years ago someone described MdM as smelling like a house full of cats where an old woman was wearing her beloved Jicky while cleaning the furniture with lemon pledge. I get that, MdM definitely surrounds Jicky with lemon and civet, but I love it. Retrying Jicky now a few years on I appreciate it much more. I wish it projected more, have been considering a bottle of the EdP to get something a bit stronger.

I wore both today, one to chest and one to arm.

I have thought I like Jicky more because that initial blast is exciting and I love that jolt it gives.
But MdM to me is more discreet. The drydown is fantastic, and I am thinking MdM may be more "people friendly" because it sits closer to the skin for me. This is comparing Jicky PDT vs. MdM EDT, so that may be part of the reason for my perception.

MdM has a wonderful drydown and I can easily see myself wearing this to work or elsewhere. Maybe *this* the fragrance I was hoping Habit Rouge would be. It's got the guerlinade at the end that I really enjoy. HR get so much praise as a classic, but each time I wear it something is missing. Something doesn't sit right with me. MdM on the other hand, feels like a classic Guerlain that I can wear comfortably.

I think I might leave Jicky to my personal home use or for the weekends. It is a bit more bold and brash. HR on the other hand can stay in the decant closet.

I'm really tempted (sometimes) to get a bottle of Jicky for collecting purposes. On the other side, I'm not to crazy about any of those two. Something too serious for me. It's the animal thing in them that drives me away, I think.

I like Habit rouge more and more each time a wear it.

All right then, I'll pull for Jicky. MdM just didn't have enough oomph for me and although it smells remarkably similar to Jicky (albeit different), Jicky gets a leg all the way over the horse. I love the extra attitude that Jicky has, a serious bit of posh with enough skank and frivolity to make it fun. MdM is too timid for that kind of wearing.

hahaha - WHICH Jicky? (I only tried the EDT, and wasn't too impressed.)

Guerlain's frustrating to me. I hear that there are often huge differences between their EDT, EDP, and parfum blends of the same scent.

Between the unacknowledged reformulations and the difference between different bottlings, I long ago gave up on Guerlaine.

While I was trying them, I picked up a bottle or MdM. Civet and powder. A frag for a different age.

The answer to the OP's question involves a complex multi layered matrix. Thankfully, now that many of the scientists from NASA are unemployed perhaps we can find one to help us answer.

In any case, there is no one Jicky just as there is no one Mouchoir de Monsieur. There are differences with the reformulations, most notable with the different bottle styles - though there are intra-bottling reformulations best denoted by the date code - as well as differences with the strength formulations. Jicky EdP is far different from Jicky Extrait which in no way compares to Jicky EdC; so on and so forth....

To simplify, it depends on what you want from Jicky or MdM. If you want less civet Jicky EdT would be best, more civet go to the EdP. Though EdP wears closer to the skin than the EdT, and Extrait closer still. Jicky EdT is the easiest to find and probably the safest to buy, especially if you're not OCD about which formulation you get. The one in the stores now still smells good....and really, isn't that all that matters?

Ungaro II would also be a good choice to try if you're looking for a scent that is a freak in the sheets and a lady in the streets.

An EXCELLENT follow up post, Aaron. I confess I was waiting for you to chime in since I've noticed you wear more Guerlain than most folks on these boards. Your comment about "depends on what you want" is spot on, because that's the core thing about Guerlain. The best example for that to me is in Habit Rouge, which is citrusy in the EdC, less so in the EdT (but more leathery [and still citrusy]), and even more butch in the EdP and parfum. Yet the construction is still always and unmistakably Habit Rouge. And of course, I will wear each one depending on "what I want" from Habit Rouge.

Yes, please, that's my kind of woman, er, I mean, fragrance.
Putting Ungaro II on the list.

I have Mouchoir de Monsieur EdT and Jicky EdP (and I've sampled Jicky EdT a few times). All three are quite different.

Mouchoir de Monsieur EdT, as everyone says, is a skanky civet fragrance, but it's quite complex and has some nice citrus in the opening. It's terrific if you like that kind of thing, and I do. I don't get great longevity out of it, but because it smells so good I really don't mind re-applying. And because of the way it develops, "layering" the same fragrance at intervals works well for me and creates different results to just a straight single application.

Jicky EdT is quite different. The civet is there, but it's toned down compared to MdeM, and it's quite a bit more floral - it makes me think of a mix of fougere and skank. I like it, but I haven't bought a bottle yet - not sure if I will.

Now, Jicky EdP, to me is like taking Jicky EdT and putting back the removed civet - it's a real powerhouse, with much better longevity on me than MdeM. To me it's also has the most complex development, with a whole load of different notes - I get patchouli and woods more strongly than I do with MdeM. Jicky EdP is one of my very favourite fragrances.

I was going to comment about the massive differences between the various versions of Habit Rouge - does anyone think the EdC is the same scent as the L'Extrait? - but I forgot/had too much rye
