What's new

James Bond/Daniel Craig

Idris Elba is the "stunt" pick at this point. He is, imo, too old to be selected. If they are looking for an actor to stick around for 4-6 films like Craig did, then that's a span (in DC's case) of almost 15 years.

so, if we posit that "early 50's" is when any new actor is going to be retired from the films, then you need someone who is currently no older than 35-40, and possibly even younger (30-35).

I like Liam Hemsworth or James Pettyfer.

My number one "I wonder" casting for Bond would have been . . .

. . . wait for it . . .

Richard Burton.

Before you laugh, look here:

I'm not laughing ... I'm dreaming about Elizabeth Taylor as a "Bond Girl" ...

Now he had the dates mixed up a bit. Connery was first cast as Bond in 1962, not 1965, when Thunderball was filmed. And in 1965 Fleming had already passed away. But I can imagine Fleming suggested Burton way back in 1961 or '62, when they were casting Doctor No.

He probably just got the two films mixed up.

Russia is the best of the Connery films for sure, and as a straight adaptation of Fleming's work.

Agreed. Certainly my favourite.

Scenes like M quoting Tennyson, Mallory proving in a desperate gun battle that he is far more than a bureaucrat, the prickly but respectful loyalty between Judi Dench's M and Bond . . . the guest appearance of the Aston Martin for a good plot reason, Bond displaying his strategic ability as he takes M to ground where they can outmaneuver Silva, the glimpse of Bond's boyhood and the things that formed him . . .

It would have been an extraordinary adventure film even had it not been about a character named "James Bond."

Casino Royale was a superb reboot for the series and a grand debut for Craig's interpretation of the role -- even including Bond's cold remark about Vesper, straight from the novel. But Skyfall is truly epic. If CR, Quantum of Solace, and SF form a trilogy about Bond, SF is the capstone.
I saw Skyfall in the theater. When he fired up the DB5 I got shivers.

Daniel Craig is my favorite Bond. I think a lot of that may have to do with his series being a little more grounded version of Bond. If you are only going to see one of his Bond movies I'd recommend Casino Royale.
I would agree. When Casino Royale came out I thought. Wow! Bond is Back! Best one since maybe Goldfinger.

I felt the same way when he leaped into the DBS in Casino Royale to go after Vesper when the bad guys nabbed her outside their hotel. I only wish they drew out the chase scene longer so I could see that glorious car peform.
I saw Skyfall before Casino Royal. I saw CR at home.

I haven't seen all the movies but I've seen every bond except Craig. My rankings are-
Connery (head and shoulders above the rest)
Lazenby
Brosnan
Barry Nelson (only American)
Dalton
Moore
I liked Lazenby too and he had the best lady of them all, Emma Peel LOL.

The first Bond I ever saw had Roger Moore. I liked Roger, but I think I liked Sean better by a little.

I won't see movies in a theater anymore. Long before I bought a big screen TV and a surround sound system with a sub woofer I would go to see movies in a theater and invariably I would become annoyed at someone. Either the person in front of me was taller than me so I had to sit in such a way that I could see the screen and would shift back and forth making me do the same or someone would have bag of candy that would crinkle loudly interfering with my enjoyment or they would just talk thoughout the movie making me want to go postal on someone. And for that priviledge I would have pay $15 or more? You have got to be kidding. As soon as I put together the TV and stereo system set up, I found the entire movie experience to be elevated many times over. Sitting or laying down on my own couch, eating my own homemade popcorn made exactly how I like it. And don't get me started on how often the speakers in the movie theaters are blown so that they crackle and distort throughout the entire movie. No excuse for that. I haven't been in a theater in years. And now I even have a second system set up in the basement. So we can have two different movies or games going at once with no fighting over what we are going to watch. Man, I really took this one way off topic, didn't I? Oh well.

Emma. Best Bond girl ever!

My favorite Bond was Moore, by a hair. I just liked his "playfulness" with the role, maybe. I really think that Peirce Brosnan would have been better than almost any of them with better written screenplays.

Seriously Roger Moore? He turned the whole thing into a comedy. Talk about tongue in cheek. I always thought of him more of a movie star than an actor.

More like The Saint then Bond.

"more of a movie star than an actor" - so George Clooney vs Richard Burton?

-jim

Clooney can act if he wants to, which isn't often. Same applied to Burton. He mainly played himself on film, although he had a reputation as a great actor on stage, particularly Shakespeare.

Tough crowd here for Sir Roger.

I think the best person to ever have the chance to portray James Bond, turned them down. Patrick McGoohan.
