What's new

It's a razor - but what kind?

A friend of mine found this razor and thought he would by it for me, as he could get it quite cheap - always a nice price :001_smile

It looks a lot like a Gillette Single Ring that I have, but there is no information at all on this razor, so I can't determine the manufacturer or when it might be produced, which lead me to think that it is some kind of a copy/replica.
Any help, if posssible, would be appreciated.

Pictures of the razor and comparison to the Single Ring can be found here: http://www.shm.dk/dansk/NN skraber.htm

On your unknown razor there seems to be more of a curve on the open comb part.

The teeth on the open comb is definitely more open on the replica.
The finish of the replica is also more crude than on the Gillette, it's quite clear when they are held up next to each other.

When counting and measuring the two, this is what I get:

Gilllette: 12 teeth, spaced 2 mm (0,08 inches), Length 8,23 cm (3,24 inches), width 4,00 cm (1,57 inches)

Replica: 10 teeth, spaced 2,5-2,7 mm (0,10-0,11 inches), Length 8,27 cm (3,26 inches), width 4,15 cm (1,63 inches)

I know it's a Sherlock Holmes case, as there are no stamps to lead anywhere, but I am curios to know a little of age and maybe which part of the world it's from.
Today it wouldn't be a problem as everything seems to come from China :w00t:

Of interesting note is that the blade-placement studs are squared off also.

Interesting find. Eastern block Gillette knock-off?

Well, as I'm living in Europe I think the chances are quite high for it to be from Eastern Europe.
Since there are no stamps, it might indicate it was produced when Gillette still held the patent, otherwise I don't see any reason to hide the manufacturer's name.
Usually they are quite keen to get their names on their products.

I has been suggested to me, that it might have been produced in the 60-70's if the patent was expired, or else maybe in the 40-50's if it is an Eastern block replica, as they didn't took patents too seriously at that time.

As a newbie to DE shaving, it is still a fun razor to have just for display.
