Items Every Man Should Own. Updated list page 7

Good recommendations all, but if I had to list the bare essentials it would include:

A Zippo lighter.
A Buck knife.
A good pair of blue jeans.
A good coat (denim, bomber, or navy pea coat are all good).
A reliable wristwatch.
A reliable mode of transportation (car, truck, or motorcycle).
A basic tool kit (screwdrivers, crescent wrench, pliers, and a roll of duck tape).
A good AM/FM radio.
A Merkur double-edged razor (let's remember where we are).
A good dog and a good pair of sunglasses (both optional).

Give me those and I not only feel manly, but good to go.

(By the way, the Corgy pups are adorable!)

A vehicle you love (I have four)
Pocket knife
Guns
Good Dog
Tattoo(s) (subjective I know)
Smartphone (it's the 21st century)
Great friends
Good pair of shades (multiple Oakleys in my case)

I'm sure there's more. But that's my short list.

"Can't Raise an Eyebrow"
I was only half joking with this response. In a peaceful country, the ability to talk reasonably is of far greater value than any weapon. Certainly I feel no need to carry a weapon or have self-defence training, and 45+ years in, I seem justified in that. A weapon would be cumbersome to carry and would pose a greater hazard than benefit to me and my family.

I don't quite understand the viewpoints expressed on this in the US. Is the need to protect yourself with lethal weapons real or perceived? Just how dangerous is American society? And how widespread is the belief that every person should be armed? Really these are very foreign ideas to me.

Conflict avoidance and conflict de-escalation skills are certainly preferable to any use of force. In the US, the question of firearms possession is often mistakenly discussed as whether one "needs" a firearm, where as the proper question is one of "rights". Despite liberal opposition to the contrary, our Second Amendment of the US Constitution, part of our Bill of Rights (not needs) guarantees us the right to own firearms. Whether one chooses to go armed or have access to weapons is a personal decision each must make for his/ her self . Some metropolitan areas have high crime and murder rates, others are relatively docile, but in my opinion, that cannot be relied upon. When ever a heinous crime occurs in a peaceful town, the survivors wring their hands and cry "nothing like that has ever happened here!" Well it did on that day. You can't make an appointment for an emergency. I choose to try and be prepared for the unexpected. Not my intent to high jack the thread or get political in the wrong forum, but for me it falls under what every man should have.

That is fantastic. I don't think I could come up with a more complete list. I would perhaps add a good pocket watch. And I'd probably subtract the dog, but that's me.

I still think that it needs a passport. Nothing better than leaving your own country for a little while and seeing someone elses. Also lets you hit up the countries that still predominately wet shave!

A great thread... and for me words of truth:

Consume more than you need
This is the dream
Make you pauper
Or make you queen
I won't die lonely
I'll have it all prearranged
A grave that's deep and wide enough
For me and all my mountains o' things (TC)

and

I lift my glass to the awful truth
which you can't reveal to the ears of youth,
except to say it isn't worth a dime (LC)

Enjoy, fw

Great list. The only thing I can think of (for those of us who live in rural or semi-rural areas) is a quality chainsaw. Oh, and if you live in a cold climate, a woodstove.
