What's new

Interesting Derby...

I made it through about 3 months now of DE, using Derbies the whole time. I normally put the blade in the Merkur HD and get shaving. I started this morning, first stroke was normal, flipped the razor and the second was like I had no blade, just took away all the cream and left most the hair. I figured I messed the angle up, kept going. Turns out 1 side cut fine, the other seemed to be too short to cut anything really. I took it out and put it back in, same thing though. Just finished with the one side.

Anyone else had an experience like this? Seems a little weird to be out of spec like that. What if it had been longer, not short, rude surprise!

Bad blades happen...

Honestly though I have gone through about 30+ Red Pack IP's and only have had 2 that were botched.

Never used Derby btw...

I had a razor in which the blade exposure was totally out of whack, so that the blade was way closer to one edge of the razor than the other. This made one side extremely mild, and the other dangerously aggressive. Needless to say, the experience of using the razor was painful! It quite literally ripped my face up.

Sounds similar to what happened here then, but the longer side was not too long thankfully. I think it's the first in about 15 Derbies. I still love them, no matter how slow I go or gentle with feathers I get red and sore....

The second derby I ever tried was normal on one side and botched on the other. So I just used the good side until it was toast and changed it. Come to think of it I REALLY need a shave. It's been one week!

i usually have good experiences with derby they are my go to blade but i always eyeball my blades before i use them in and out of the razor and after i pop the new one in im ever so carefull till i know that the blade is good in look and feel as cheap as they are and as many as i have it doesn't matter if i throw a few away

When I used derbys, my favorite was one blade I pulled out of the package, was stamped badly *the cutting edges were not even attached to the blade LOL* then every 2nd or 3rd blade one side cuts great the other was crap... I have not ran into this with Astra Superiors or Feathers!

Cheers,

I love all the empirical data that gets posted here.

Myself, I apply the laser calibrated Mark 1 eyeball to inspect the gap every time a blade gets changed.

On that note, I did bust out my micrometer. I measured from the center holes where it gets aligned to the cutting edge. The variance was only about +/- .01 ". Maybe that makes a difference, not sure. I sure could tell the two sides apart when shaving. On to the next blade!

Some good news, finally ordered some Tabac soap, it's almost here, can't wait...
