What's new

I'm gonna do it...

Shave with a straight! Got my Parker SRW and I let mybeard grow for 2 days so it's s bit thick. Now do I go against the grain or should I wait till i'm a bit more comfortable with the razor. Also I don't use my pinky when holding the razor. Is this a normal grip?? I learned with a DE in 5 days but I think this requires a bit more time.

I would recommend only shaving with the grain and on your cheeks only. Straight shaving is not hard but it also isn't something you will just pick up on the very first shave.

As far as the pinky is concerned I would try it both ways and use what feels the most 'natural' for you. Normal grip uses the pinky.

There is no right or wrong way to grip a straight, whatever feels right and works for you. I'll go along with just doing your sideburns and cheeks. Just do these areas for quite a few times, and finish up with your DE.

As for moving to other parts of your face, that's something that you'll know when its time to try other areas. Just go slow and keep that blade almost flat on your skin. The first, or should I say the first of many straight shaves will not be all that close. But that's O.K. Learn to get comfortable with the straight before you try shaving those harder to shave areas on your face.

Don't give up. Even though the nicks, cuts, weepers, and irritation get you discouraged, just take your time. It'll take awhile but straight shaving can and will become as easy as DE shaving. :thumbup1:
