What's new

If you were going to buy a straight and strop from a vendor, who would it be?

I've been looking to buy my first "new" straight razor w/ entry level strop, made shave ready by a reputable vendor.

There's SRD, VintageBlades, and Classic Shaving that I've seen so far offering this service.

Is there anyone else I should look at that carries either Dovo or TIs? If not, who would you choose?

Does not generally carry Dovos or TIs but does have a small but nice collection of razors at very reasonable prices. Just happens to have a Dovo when I looked a minute ago.

Razors come shave ready.

Also sells decent strops.

No affiliation but a satisfied customer.

Steve Dempster is a member here and the owner of The Invisible Edge, Dovo Razors UK and Thiers-Issard UK. He sells new Dovo and TI razors and also a fine selection of vintage razors. His service is outstanding.

Then there is Martin at RasurPur who also provides outstanding service.

You can find everything you need from either vendor although I think Martin offers a wider selection of products overall.

Are prices being taken into consideration in your suggestions? It seems as though Jim at Vintage Blades and Lynn SRD seem to offer a pretty amazing price for a shave ready prep of the blade, and strop along with the razor.

And also, my primary goal is to buy new. So, no vintage restorations.

If I were going to buy a first razor and strop, knowing what I know now, I'd get a quarter-ground Grelot from Martin (above) and a strop from Tony Miller.

SRD and Vintage Blades have a good selection of Razor/Strop combos. Lynn Abrams hones for both places so you are getting a great edge. RupRazor is another great place and Ken hones amongst the best. All three of these places have some of the best prices around and are run by great people.

I emailed Tony today and he is no longer making beginner strops because it is not cost effective.

I would like to point out that Tony is offering his strops in a leather-only version, at a great price. I stand by my recommendation; he doesn't call it a beginner's strop, but it really doesn't cost much more than his old beginner's strop, and can be upgraded, unlike the old one. Check it out!

Pretty much both a beginner set and an end-all set--if there were such a thing as end-all ;)! Great advice.
