What's new

I believe the one on the left is a NEW Thick Bar. Correct? Would scrubbing bubbles be the best way to clean it up without stripping the gold?

Any ideas on what razor the handle on the left goes to?

Thanks and sorry about the lousy I-Phone pictures. When I sell a few things I am going to get a decent camera.

The one on the left looks more like a New Improved, it is hard to tell from the photo, but is the base plate flat?

I think you meant "NEW DeLuxe" there... New Improved is an entirely different beast. I don't think it's a NEW DeLuxe, though. Looks like a standard short-comb NEW to me, but it's very hard to tell from that photo.

Edit: I dunno... the more I look at it, you could be right.

The one on the right looks like a Durham

Agreed. That or a Wade & Butcher DE:

Both Wade and Butcher and Durham Duplex used the same handle. It is a great substitute for a cracked Old-Type handle.

The OP's razor does look a bit like a New Deluxe from the picture - macro focus would help us see for sure.

My advice for cleaning - very hot water with dish soap, soak, toothbrush, lather, rinse, repeat. Gentle polishing with a soft cloth and MAAS or Simichrome - can't tell for sure if it is just surface crud . . . but gentle first, then get tougher if needed. Once you get tough with a NEW, the original gold (if any is left) will be gone for sure!

FWIW I found a cased gold Tech for under 5.00 at an antique mall and hit it with Scrubbing Bubbles and the foam started turning a goldish yellow almost instantly,no harm since I hosed it off PDQ but be careful.

I am voting New Deluxe, because blurry or not, the left hand side of the head should show a bump if it was a NEW.
Plus, that's the right handle.

Its just too blurry, OP Mr5x5, just take better non close up pics.

This is what I'm talking about alex, and why blurry doesn't matter in this case.

pick up a shortcomb NEW and hold it at that angle. There is no way to blur that into a straight line. The corner teeth also look different on the shortcomb, and the top of the bottom plate too.

That was exactly what swayed me towards NEW DeLuxe, too.

I still could go either way on the handle. I really can't tell whether it has the flattened shoulder on the neck fitting or the rounded one like the standard R&B handle.

I don't recall ever seeing a short comb NEW with that handle.

I gave up a long time ago assuming that the heads and handles in photos like this one necessarily come from the same decade even. :a6:

That said, it's pretty reasonable to think that it'd be a DeLuxe Red & Black handle to match the head, and the photo's just too scuzzy to be sure.

Definitely NEW DeLuxe.

Now we just need to get your handle sorted. Does the neck look like the one on the right below (note how the bit right before it joins the handle is flattened)?

It is not flattened like the one on the right but rounded like the one on the left, however the area under the threaded "cap" where the head attaches is smooth like the one on the right.

Thanks for the assistance. Maybe I have a frankenrazor?

Sounds like you have the handle we normally see on the standard Red & Black NEW, the other style that I didn't happen to have pictured in that photo. However, I've found enough standard heads with "DeLuxe" handles and DeLuxe heads with "standard" handles to not be 100% sure that they didn't come out of the factory either way. This was a particularly turbulent time in Gillettes history, not to mention the Great Depression.

The B&B folks are true scholars and gentlemen. Thanks for all the assistance!

I plan on cleaning it up to the best of my ability and trying it out though I fear the open comb. :blushing:

I'm more of a straight razor fan now.
