I have been a big fan of Timeless razors, especially their Ti line up. I also have & enjoy their Slim .5mm in Stainless. It’s a good shaver for me and it delivers excellent shave results 99% of the time with that 1% usually coming from user error and shaves that are at times rushed as I’m pressed for time. It’s a different shaver from the usual Timeless line up as it has a thinner head profile with positive blade exposure while still being quite smooth & easy to use. Some time back, I received a Paradigm Ti Diamondback that has been a real nice razor to use. As some of you know, Titanium is my preferred alloy for a razor as it just feels softer or warmer on the skin and and it aids in helping to keep the skin undisturned and in a somewhat calm state. For me at least, it does.
I’ve always had the feeling that once I shaved with the Ti Diamondback, it felt similar to something that I’d used before but, just couldn’t connect the dots for some reason. And then it hit me. I used the Timeless Slim a couple weeks ago and sure enough, it felt very similar to the Ti D-back. So, I decided to have a little shave off between these two razors Just to see how similar or not they are to each other. Off the bat one is Titanium and the other is Stainless Steel but, the slimmer profile of the Timeless Slim actually puts it in close proximity with the Ti D-back. Weight is also not that far apart either with the less weight advantage going to the Paradigm but, they are separated by a small margin. Plus, I used a titanium handle on the Slim head which helped in keeping weight closer to each other.
Decided that I’m going to go for a 3 round shave off to get in everything equally just in case there’s a mis-shave anywhere along the way and it gives a fair shot to both of these outstanding razors. On performance, they can both deliver in a heartbeat. The question is to keep performance at that upper level with shave consistency on my part in giving both razors a fair shake. I’ll be using the Perma-Sharp blades in both razor combatants as they have proven to pair beautifully with these razors, equally.
How was the shave? Well, these two razors share similar shave feel & cutting ability. The Ti D-back had the left side of my face and the SS Slim had the right. I went with a conventional 3 pass shave to get the most time each to give myself better real time data that will help in the next 2 shaves providing a fuller and more complete picture. Both handled their sides nearly quite evenly as the first pass both brought the whiskers down to skin level easily & comfortably. Though I felt a sor=ter touch on skin with the D-back, the Slim was no slouch on comfort & feel. The 2nd pass was more of the same and was the ATG pass. Both went with this pass with great ease and comfort while simultaneously exhibiting great ease of movement. Basically, I was moving these two razors around as if I had two Gillette Techs in my hand. Surely they both offer substantially more blade feel over a Tech but, they are both easy to command and control. A careless move though and they can and will bite, smoothly though. Perhaps a bit more acute with the Slim as the D-back has that soft feel which conversely, can lull one to shave sleep and there are the red dots or blood streaks without giving one any clue on what it just did. Yes, that smooth. Face feel on both sides after the 2nd ATG pass were nearly identical. They are both rather quiet in that you don’t get a high pitched singing accord when both are getting busy but, there’s enough audible effect to give one plenty of info on what’s going on at the business end. The 3rd pass and final pass is XTG for me. This is the money maker pass and it gets any and all stragglers and perhaps a brief buffing session wherever needed but, most times it’s around the chin & jawline area with Sir Adam getting some attention once in awhile. I took my time on this pass as I had placed some extra lather on my off hand just to touch up spots when I had a feel or two to check for stubborn whiskers. Both of these worked to near perfection with concise yet smooth shave strokes eliminating those pesky stragglers with ease. Face & neck were both clear of any stubble and after my final splash of cold water, not a red dot to be seen, anywhere. I made an alum pass as I usually do and I felt the tiniest bit of heat on the left side of the Adam’s Apple. Nothing to get worked up over as I just probably used and applied a bit more pressure than necessary because of the softer feeling D-back. Everywhere else was a solid A+ in overall feel. Once I finished rinsing off the alum and applying the usual witch hazel & splash. The skin was refreshed and felt good. I cleaned and put away my gear and went for another face feel and I felt before doing so that my skin on the D-back side felt calmer and nearly undisturbed. The SS Slim side though felt slightly like sensitive to the touch. Not irritated by any stretch of the imagination but, I felt as if I knew I had shaved there whereas the D-back felt as if I hadn’t shavesd at all. Very strange feeling because truthfully, the SS Slim was superb at every pass and went toe to toevs the D-back.
That shave was about at 7:30 this morning. I kept checking about very 2 hours or so for face feel in comfort and to see when the first remnants of stubble would appear. That slight sensitive feeling on the Slim side was gone within the hour and the skin was truly soft, supple and comfortable to the touch on both sides. At about the 4pm mark, I finally caught the first wisps of stubble on the Slim side, right at the sideburns area between mid-ear and bottom of the ear lobe. The D-back side didn’t get anything until about an hour & a half later. Both sides are light with more pronounced areas or patches of stubble on my right side (Slim side) over the left side (D-back) but, overall it’s still light growth with the Ti D-back winning on both longevity and overall effectives of comfort/feel. The Perma-Sharps give excellent feel with comfort and cutting ability in both of these excellent razors.
Round 1 goes to the Ti D-back by a nose. These next two shaves are going to give a good accounting of where these two stalwarts hang in the premium razor category. Oh, honorable mention to the WSP Citrus Blast Formula T shave soap. Excellent lather and the residual effect that it offers is superb. Comfort that it provides along with the glide is simply top notch. Great scent to boot.
Round 2 soon enough. Great shaves to all…
