What's new

I used to love old Gillette razors

I've been using a Merkur barber pole exclusively for a good year.

Whenever I try to use a Gillette again, I have BIG problems. It isn't how I remember it. :cursing:

IDK if I can use vintage Gillettes anymore. The angle is totally different, as is the feel. :scared:

My old school Gillette razors have sat unused in a drawer for months now. I favor my HD, Slant, Futur, and newly aquired GEM G Bar over any of the Super Speeds, adjustables, and techs that I've used. I'll say this, though, the Gillettes were great for learning.

Merkur for me as well (HD, Classic, 38C, 1904). Of the Gillettes, the Super Speed workd best for me, but nothing like the Merks.

In the interest of keeping your many Gillettes from becoming dispirited, perhaps you should all consider sending them all to me, where I will give them a good home and let them see the light of day often, as well as partaking of many shaving adventures...

They are different indeed.

When I switch around, it takes me a day or two to get the "feel" back for a certain manufacturer. Of course that is even true between the more modern Gillettes and the old style so...

In any case, plenty of interest here on the BST if you'd like to parlay those unused Gillettes into some cash for new Merkurs.... :w00t:

I still keep 4 DE's in rotation. I love my SS for the nice mild comfortable shave I prefer on most days, but today I slapped a Feather in my Merkur 34G for the first time and got a very close shave with fewer passes and no touchups. Good thing for the SS that I don't need a close shave for work. For now the SS and Tech get the call for mild shaves. For close shaves, a Merkur or EJ. I still like having the choice.

I actually prefer the Gillette Red Tip and Aristocrat over both the Merkur 33C and HD. I have all 4 and tried them out for 1 week. This seems to be more of preference.

Merkur Puresgress XL and Slant barberpole are my current go-to's. I like the combination of 4 inch/4 ounce ratio razors. I won't use anything else.

I have one Merkur left that is heading to BST soon, a long with a couple others. I have found 2 razors that I really enjoy. All the Gillettes I tried early on just didn't do it for me. They might now that I feel like I am getting the hang of things.

This past week changed things because some vendor decided to carry a razor that I couldn't resist any longer...

Using vintage Gillettes is a new thing for me, and they do require adjustment after using a slant-bar almost exclusively. When I use a 40's SS, they seem almost weightless in my hand and I have to apply noticeable amounts of pressure to shave closely. I have a Red-Tip and a President that, while a bit more aggressive than the SS, still require a bit more work to get the closeness I'm used to. Today, I tried an Aristocrat that came to me from Trendkill (via GoldenMonkey) and got an amazing shave.

Same here.
I handed over my SS to the wife. Now that is what she claims but actually it was stolen from me because it was being unused.
My slim and black handle slim are unemployed as well. But so are my 12C and 38C.
The razor I pick up for 9 out of ten shaves is the 39C.

There are plenty of us who will give all these unloved and unused vintage Gillettes a good home! They'll be given lots of regular exercise and kept well groomed :001_smile

I know what you mean! I have been using my Muhle R106 for a while now and went back to try out one of my vintage, and I just don't know if it was a bad shave or not, it was my Rocket and I am HOPING it was just the blade, or an off day for me! ;)

I'm all Merkur as well... 34C, 23C, Hoffritz Slant, Futur.... I have one injector that is occassionally put into rotation. I have tried many vintage Gillettes, and they never did it for me.

Yep - There is quite a difference between current production razors and the vintage Gillettes. I've come to prefer the new production EJ DE89, over the vintage models. The EJ DE89 is just so much of an easier shave. With the vintage models you just have to "work" the shave so much harder to get the same result.

I find that my SS gives a much more mild shave when compared to my HD.

The SS gives a smooth mild shave that you can barely feel on your face. The HD is slightly more harsh, but I think it gives a little bit better of a shave than the SS with fewer passes.

That said, I personally think it all comes down to technique and personal preference. Each razor has pro's and cons. I think it comes down to what you like the best!!!
