What's new

I love my G-bar, but it's time to spread my wings

I've been shaving with my fantastic Gem G-bar since I was 16 years old, now almost 18, I'll never abandon my friend, but I really would be interested in some other single edged blades that give a shave in the rough ball park of the G-bar in the earlier 20th century. And I've been having to give up using a nice lather with a boars hair brush because it fell apart, so some advice on brush maintenance and preparation would be absolutely fantastic :)

I'm a very recent convert to SE, only last week bought a G-Bar and an Ever Ready 1912 (the Made In England model w/ bakelite case; Gem also made them I believe). I can heartily recommend the 1912 - plenty of them on Ebay, not expensive, shave to die for. I love my G Bar too - these two are putting my Fat Boy, Futur and Jagger DE89 in the shade!

As for brushes - don't go mashing them in the soap/cream or against your face, rinse them well, shake, don't use them to clean up the sink (lol), fluff em up a bit & and store them properly. Should work.

Good luck with your SE hunt. There's some beauties out there - having seen some of the member's razors here, I'm looking for a bullet-tip Micromatic myself...

Be very careful. Your second SE razor will lead to a third and fourth and, inevitably, tenth. The Open Comb Micromatic or Clogpruf are both fantastic SE razors. Or you can go old skool and pick up a 1912.

I can heartily recommend the 1912, 1914 and 1924 variants.
I found the bullet tip MM fairly close to a Gbar.

Most SE razors are within a hair's breath of being the same. The main difference is the physical appearance.

Pick out something that looks cool to you and run with that.

These are about the coolest of the modern SE razors you will find

I'd recommend either a 1912 or maybe even a vintage DE. fwiw I think the G-bar is one of the best looking SE I've seen!
