But as fate would have it, I somehow ended up killing some time in an antique store.
I wandered around looking at all the cool stuff, keeping my eye open for anything shaving related....when I spot a couple of razors I had never seen there before.
Two of them were nice gold fat handled techs in their cases...but the third one really caught my eye...it was gold, it was shiny, it was a Gillette open comb TTO in a case, it was also... $45!
Hmmm... I dont buy $45 razors, I buy common, soap scum, cruddy razors for $10 or less, I'm not a collector, I just like trying different razors...
I have them open the display case so I can take a better look...nice, real nice.
I reluctantly put it back and continue my search...
I go through a box of soap scum cruddy razors that I have gone through a few times before...maybe I can get my razor fix here.
I pick out a couple of single edge razors, a GEM Micromatic with the tapered end which is in not bad shape, and an old looking one with a cool engraved handle, no name on it and it is really cruddy, its got a blade so rusted I cant remove it..this should be a challenge to clean...Asking $12 each, I'm sure I can get them for my max of $10 each
As the nice lady and I negotiate the sale of the cruddy razors, the subject of that pretty, shiny Gillette comes up...I explain that although it is really, really nice, it was out of my price range and I would have to settle on the 2 cruddy razors.
She seems to really want to sell the nice gold Gillette and we negotiate some more....
She took the $50 I had in my pocket and I went home with a single edge GEM, a cruddy single edge no name rust bucket with a nice handle and my nice shiny open comb gold Gillette.
I still paid way more than I wanted to, but I have wasted $50 in a lot worse ways...I can easily justify this I figure
So, here is the case for my new expensive pride and joy Not mint, but thats ok
And my shiny new toy...
As it turns out...by checking on the B&B Gillette Dating Wiki, it seems to be a model 'Sheraton'...only made between 1937 and 1939
The blade box only contained 3 blades and a cool advertisement, no idea if this is original to the razor or period correct..not that it matters much to me
It really is nice and shiny
As far as the cruddy razors go...
the GEM Micromatic did clean up really nice...and the no-name, rust bucket with the cool handle took about an hour and a half to get cleaned up.
It turned out to be an Ever-Ready 1912 and should now be a serviceable razor, I should of taken 'before' pics
Even after I pried the rusty blade out of it, there was still so much gunk, corrosion and rust that I could not see the name in it,,,I'm amazed it cleaned up so well
Heres a group shot of my $50 razor fix...
Never spent so much on a razor, but I'm happy with my new collection and cant wait to give them a try.
Thanx for looking
Kevin
