What's new

I guess I've come to the right place.

I find this whole thing amazing. I've been fascinated by fountain pens since I was just a kid. I now decide to get into traditional shaving and the forum for that has one of my other loves in a subforum. I think I was the only kid using fountain pens in high school in 1999. I got my first ink well type nib pen when I was 10 and have been in love since. I have since graduated to parker style gel inserts for daily use (I write a lot for work and need something that is a littl e more reliable/steadfast). I also make my own pens. My latest was a stabilized green elder maple burl in green/gunmetal/gold. I don't have the pen here to upload a picture or I would. I'm a fairly simple guy but I enjoy the finer things in life as far as what's needed. I have to shave, why not do it with style and class and the same goes for writing. I don't care about fashion or what's cool by any means and I consider myself a simple man but, these are the few luxurys I provide for myself.

Welcome to the Nib! To really fit in you'll need to ditch those gel pens, though. :001_smile

Trust me I understand the sentiment against the gels. They are, at least to me, less work when I need them to work. Sometimes I just don't have time to mess with a fountain. I used to carry one at work and ended up with a lot of problems. I've destroyed some unfirom pants with ink that leaked, I've been caught in many situations where the ink was too dry in the split to write. Just too much fuss for quick jobs. At home or when I have time it's fountains all the way. I know that I'm not exactly a purist by any means but the love is still there.

Maybe try a Pilot Vanishing Point if you need to jot quick notes frequently. Just don't carry it in a pants pocket. Anyway, welcome to The Nib!

Can you post a photo of the pen you made?

My Pelikan M200 is my go-to work pen. It has a large capacity, and Pelikan Brilliant Black is a nice work ink. Of course, I have never carried it in my pants.

Allow me to elaborate a little, I'm active duty Air Force and on our uniform pants near the ankle are several pen pockets. That's where I keep my pens because at work I rarely wear my uniform top. It's not like I'm just throwing them in a regular pant pocket. My converter decided to let loose and my fresh refill of pilot black trashed the pants.

I'll post some pics when I get a chance. At the moment I only have the one that I made and keep for myself and it's at work. I make them as going away gifts for guys that are PCS'ing (changing bases).

It's really nothing too special, I use the kits from pennstateind and turn them on a lathe. I'm a machinist and welder for the aircraft so I have access to all kinds of cool machines to make them happen.

Welcome and on behalf of my family and I , "Thanks for your service!"

Hrm, wonder if an eyedropper would have let loose like the converter did, since the seals and stuff would be on there. Also, welcome, you will very much fit in. And please show the pen when you get a chance, as I didn't even know they made kits for people to use.

I have four eye droppered pens, using only silicone grease on the threads. None have leaked, and I store them horizontally when not in use.

I've had a couple of gel pens (G2 and Pilot) ruin shirts and pants. I carry a Pelikano Junior or a Lamy Safari, when I'm in utility clothes, and have never had a problem.

Welcome!
Don't forget if you fancy cigars & pipes to stop by the brown leaf!
For a work pen, I too like the Namiki (Pilot) Vanishing Point.

I've always loved the rugged looks of the Safari, I just never got around to getting one.

Thanks for all the welcomes guys

A Lamy Nexx M (metal clip) would be a good work pen option, as well. It's inexpensive, has the same nib as a Safari, and I think it looks a little nicer. I also like the rubber grip on the Nexx.

But you have full access to one of the best pens out there!! The good old Skilcraft US Gov't pens!!! These are actually really highly regarded on some every day carry forums! I never had one let me down while in the Navy!!!

Honestly, that would even be nice to have the 3 in 1's but since our budget is continuosly thinning, we get the cheapo skilcrafts that hardly work (and that's if we have money to get those). We barely have enough tooling to do the jobs we have and we end up macgyvering stuff to do it. Truly, I just love pens in all shapes and varietys. If it works well I like it.
