Since I joined the local Italian shaving forum (Il Rasoio), I have been doing some one-on-one mentoring for new shavers. Today, a fellow brought over a Dovo Bismark with a chip near the toe from hitting the screw on a loom-type travel strop. While I prefer working on a BBW/Yellow Coticule combo, he told me he was going to buy the 3K/8K/C12K set from Open_Razor, so I decided to use a similar set-up (Norton 4K/8K and C12K) so I could teach how to lap the synthetic hones and use the C12K to finish. I took the chip out on the 4K with slurry (I have the Norton Prep Stone). It took about an hour and, no I didn't count the passes. Then I did 20 passes on the 8K and 100 on the C12K. In preparation for the lesson, yesterday I honed up a Mastro Livi regrind using the same set-up to verify that I had the technique down enough to teach it and, this morning, I shaved with it. The result was more than satisfactory. After the work, I had my student shave to critique his technique and he was also very happy. I'm feeling very good about the whole interaction, especially since it was the first time that I needed to remove a chip.
