How much lather?

When I use soap to generate a lather, I generally get sufficient lather for 3 passes and touch up, perhaps four passes, but no more. Is this what others generally obtain, or should I get more?

That's about what I get.

I've found when I use Tabac soap I've got exactly the amount you describe, no more.
When I use C&E Nomad soap it just works better if I do a superlather, so I add a little KMF Lavender, then I get enough for four or five passes.
When I use Tabac I've found making superlather is actually a step backward.

But in general my results are comparable to yours.

Depends on so many things...

1) How you generate your lather "your technique"
2) How much water
3) what soap
4) what cream etc etc etc.

When I generate lather with MWF...I get enough for 2 passes max before re-hitting the puck.

When I generate lather with Penhaligon's BB, I get enough for a four pass shave

When I generate lather with DR Harris Arlington Shave Cream, I get enough to paint the house...

Thus....the true answer is...YMMV and it depends!

When I face lather I usually get enough for 3. Occasionally I have to get a little extra for the third.

I look at it like this, if you have enough lather for every intended pass, then that's all you need. I'd be willing to bet that generating enough lather for three passes, and touch up is the norm for fellow B&Bers. That's about how much lather I get for each shave, considering I don't water it down on accident. That rarely happens anymore...Only when I'm not paying attention. In that case though, I just recharge the brush on the soap, and all is well.

+1

I don't usually have more than two passes worth of lather in the bowl at one time. But all I have to do is add a smidgen of water and swirl. Voila, more lather. I guess this is because I like my lather heavy and my brush is well loaded with soap.

IMO, the above response nails the crux of the issue and the correct answer to the question.

Having more than that is just wasteful. Do I sometimes have extra? You bet. I hate to waste the lather, so I'll sometimes wash my face again. Often the excess just goes down the drain. :frown:

Wow, and all this time I thought I was scewing something up because I could only create enough lather for around 3 passes :w00t: Good to know I'm not the only one

At times I have made enough lather for a couple of complete 4 pass shaves. Then I learned to scale back.

How much lather?

Simple. As much as you need for your shave. All extra is just going down the drain.

That being said, I really don't make it a big deal. I make as much lather as I get and thats that.

I usually have enough for 3-4 passes.

Like you, I've wondered what I was doing wrong because all the shaving videos and posts here on B&B looked like they had enough lather for an entire football team! I'm happy to discover here that I am just normal.

I usually get enough to do 5-6 passes. Maybe even a bit more. I just noticed one day that I kind of lathered faster than usual and I got more. So, I've been doing it ever since.

I just soak the brush in hot water then dump it out. Usually there's a bit of water left in the bowl (not much) but that combined with the brush water after flicking it lightly once or twice is enough to get that amount.

I've used TOBS, Proraso, and Vulfix shaving cream with about the same results.

my silvertip has a small 20mm knot and will hold enough for max 3 passes, which is exactly what I need.
