How much have you spent on razors

I saw the post on gentlemanly restraint which prompted me to add up my purchases over the years. I have officially had RAD for about 4 years now and have approximately spent $2000 on razors !
Anybody else care to confess to the cost of their addiction? It's quite eye opening when you add it all up.

There are good reasons why I have chosen the observe a period of restraint. The astonishing amount spent over the last 3 months is one of them. Determining the exact amount is too jarring and may be incriminating! I'll leave it there ... :001_unsur

7 straights, 5 DE, 8 brushes, 5 strops including a TM, 2 Kanayama, and a Mountain Mike's, 3 DMT plates, Norton, Naniwa, C12K, and a Coticule....

Total on the hobby could be 5k if we count the aftershaves and soaps

JUST razors? Figure average of $40 for the DE is $200, on the 7 straights, one was a PIF, one was $350, the other 5 were between $130 and $200, so figure $850+$350=$1200 plus the DEs, probably closer to $1600 with tax and shipping.

The first rule of AD is NEVER add up what you've spent. These numbers must remain vague and fuzzy at best if your going to justify more purchases.

Yes it is somewhat eye opening to add up every time you say "it's only $100". I for some reason was thinking of all the money l have spent on discretionary items and the need to put more away for that inevitable rainy day. We all do it - Starbucks, golf, cars, wife's/significant others shoe and purse fetish, home theatre equipment etc. Again, that other post made me reflect back to this very topic of showing restraint and I find it cathartic to admit the amount and also reassuring that I am not alone.

LOL!

Even if it were more than $5k, it would still not beat most of my hobbies.
RC aircraft, motorcycles, off-road motorcycles, guns, computers (I spent $1200 on a 9600baud dial-up modem in 1989), etc....

This is different... you NEED this stuff! Just think how much it would have cost if you weren't saving money by wet shaving! :scared:

Seems like a lot, but when you start adding up the costs of high end cartridges, you'll find you are probably spending less.

Maybe.

But within maybe a month, I did spend roughly $150 on just shaving mugs, last spring. I'll tell you what happened, though, razors opened the door for non-shaving spending. I hadn't even thought about updating my digital camera in years, then I wanted to go into macro mode for some closeup photos (of razors and brushes and mug, yes). But the old Minolta was on strike, then I saw a really cute Canon point & shoot with optical viewfinder that was on sale at Amazon.

So, yes, I bought it without making sure what I could do with it. And a couple of used pocket cameras, and some camera cases, and extra battery packs, and neck straps, and stuff. AD doesn't have to stay directed at shaving supplies; it sneaks up from any old direction.

I only have two razors. I firmly believe that you can save money with DE shaving. The second razor I bought was a Merkur Progress and I am completely satisfied with it, so unless I break or lose it I don't expect to buy any more. Grand total razor expenditure would be a bit over $100.

You seem to have some sort of natural immunity to the virus, perhaps we should study you further... NAH!

Razors has been very modest for me - 3 razors for $160. That includes a $30 EJde89l last December, a $19 Weishi TTO in January (for traveling) and a Weber DLC with Classic & Bulldog handles in August.

The 6 brushes, soaps, creams and aftershaves are another story :001_cool:

DE razors I have purchased:

$ 1.95 Fat Boy when it was new (wish I still had it)
$20.00 Gillette Slim (used) from BST
$34.00 Edwin Jagger DE 87 (new)
------
$55.95 TOTAL

Maybe.

With a Fusion cartridge costing $2.25 per shave and a bottle of Headslick costing $10, with an estimated annual inflation rate of 6%, a single cart lasting for one week, and a bottle of Headslick lasting 20 days, I calculate that I will break even on April 22nd, 2178..... give or take 14.35 years to account for market and exchange rate fluctuations of the imported components.
