How do you keep track of blade usage?

So I started a poll @ http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/332827-Blade-curiosity and found that 70% of the DE folks were using a blade 4 or fewer times. up until now I have basically just changed my blade when I felt like it but today I had the bright idea to use a dice, with my use count being the up number of dots.obviously if SWMBO messes with it I'm done, but, if you read through that thread, "turtle" has a pretty simple method to keep track of lots of blades. So, as the title suggests, what methods is everyone using to keep track of their blade/s use time?

I don't have any dice and I need to get some for keeping track of the shaves on my injectors and Cobra as I have no idea how long a blade has been in them.

For my DE and SE shaves I use a different razor and blade every day. I may have anywhere up to a dozen blades unwrapped at any given time

When I finish my shave, I remove the blade from the razor, drop it on a towel, fold a corner of the towel over and pat it dry. I then move the blade to one of 6 blade wrappers that are marked 1 thought 6 for the number of shaves the blade sitting on that wrapper has on it.

When I shave, I decide which razor to use, then I grab one of the unwrapped blades and shave. Once done I dry the blade and move it down to the next numbered wrapper.

This is about the only way I can keep track of how many shaves I have on a dozen open blades.

Lucky! I count my head and face each as one seperate shave, accounting for real estate ya know? so I generally get 5 or 6 shaves per blade which would put me at monday and thursday with a fresh blade and then shift back a day each week, but alas, sometimes i skip my head, other times i skip a saturday and/or sunday, so in a nutshell, i need help keeping track. Hence the dice :)

p.s. turtle, thanks for putting your method in, when you first told me about it you blew my mind! excellent in its simplicity!

This system/method might not work if you have small children in the house unless you can put a wall shelf high enough to keep open razor blades out of their reach.

Right now I keep a spreadsheet because I'm still in evaluation mode and I know I wouldn't remember my shaves otherwise. Some day, after I've settled on my blades, i'd just let my face tell me when to put in a new blade.

I normally shave 6 days skipping Weds, 3 shaves per blade so change Sunday and Thursday. Sometimes I shave 7 days a week or change my day off. Then it gets too complicated and I try to stretch an extra day out of a blade. Hmmm. A pair of dice makes more sense. Thanks for the idea

I just use one blade at a time and don't see myself changing on that score.

I'm still figuring out how many shaves I can get out of a blade. I know it will depend, and I gather there may be variation even within the make and model of blade. I'd like to get 5 or 6 shaves, and start with a new blade on Monday morning. That will be my system if it works out. Right now I see 4 as no problem. Still making my mind up whether stretching the blade to 5 is going to work out. We'll see.

I keep track of brush & soap/cream usage in XL. It helps to decide which get sold or replaced. While I also track blade usage, I tend to toss them after 2 uses anyway. Two is easy enough, for even me, to remember.

I use a blade 3 times then toss it. Generally, I keep it in the same razor for all three shaves. I keep track in my head, but I only have 1 blade loaded at any time, so it is not too hard.

I get 5-6 shaves out of a blade. I have a little pocket calendar and when I start a new blade I shade in the corner of that day on the calendar. I started doing that when I would lose track of when I put a new blade in. I could go by feel, but I hate to start a shave and then realize the blade isn't up to snuff and have to change it. And I didn't want to put in a new blade thinking I'd reached that 5-6 shave limit when it had been only 3 days.

I use a Field Notes Notebook.

Date - Total number of Shaves (ever, not per blade) - Soap - Blade #

Where # is the number of shaves with the current blade.

I also put purchases in there in the form of:

Date - Store - Description - Amount

The next line is

Total Spent: $

This allows me to track spending and shaves/usages of a soap or whatever. Granted, I shave ever 3-4 days... so a single book will last me like 5 years :)

I have to admit it, I did think "spreadsheet and applet" when I realized my head was getting confused as to how many shaves the blade had done. My wife caught the "engineers" look in my eyes and brought me up short. She said, "How many shaves per blade?". I said four. She said, "Do you use two razors at the same time? Please tell me you don't pull the blade out to use it in two different razors.". I gave her a resounding "no" to both of those double edged statements. Sally then handed me a pencil and said, "write the day you need to change to a new blade on the next blade's wrapper.". I denied thinking about creating a spreadsheet or writing a simple-to-me software program to keep a tight leash on razor consumption. She didn't believe me but I'm sticking to my story.
