How difficult is it to acquire a double ring?

This has probably been asked before, but I didn't see it in a search. I was just wondering how hard is it today to acquire one of these? I am sure they are all going for high dollar amounts now, which means I'll likely never get one. I was just curious since I think they are one of the best looking razors, and I only collect Gillettes. It seems I never even see them for sale any more.

They do pop up every so often but your right, they command a premium price.

One on the 'bay right now.

You have to be aware of B&B policies in reference to Ebay live auctions.

All members

1. Feel welcome! Jump right into the conversation -- a great place to start is by introducing yourself in our Shave Clinic and Newbie Check-in, as well as in the Hall of Fame.

2. Realize that we take great pride in B&B being a work-friendly, internet oasis for gentlemanly behavior. This means that profanity, inflammatory comments regarding politics and/or religion, personal attacks, pornographic images, discussions of illegal or illicit activity, or any other ungentlemanly behavior as deemed inappropriate by the Administrators/Moderators, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Offenders will be dealt with swiftly. More to the point, if it's likely to be offensive, or if you wouldn't say it to someone in person, it doesn't belong here.

3. Comply with the requests of the moderators. We don’t interfere unless it’s absolutely necessary. We will gladly discuss with you any requests we make. This can be done via private messaging so as to save anyone from any unnecessary public embarrassment.

4. New members are welcome to purchase items from the B/S/T forum right away, but must wait until they've amassed 45 days of membership and 50 posts to use this forum to sell, trade, or post "want to buy" ads. More on the B/S/T Rules here.

4a. The BST forum was not set up as a profit center for individuals. B&B discourages members from only posting sales and not contributing in other forums. To use the BST, the vast majority of your posts should be on the shaving forums.

4b. Members without a bonafide internet or brick and mortar storefront may also be considered vendors (at the sole discretion of the mod team) and may lose their privileges in the B/S/T forum if they are marking up items to unreasonable prices, or selling large quantities of items on the B/S/T on a regular basis - again, both of these variables are at the sole discretion and classification of the mod team. We welcome members who wish to add further value to the membership of the forum by selling items here in the B/S/T - however this community is not intended to be the free storefront and marketing arm of businesses.

5. While we enjoy offering the B/S/T thread as a service to our members, we see it as just a small portion of our site's greater good. Problems are incredibly rare, but you should know that transactions in B/S/T are ultimately not the responsibility of B&B -- caveat emptor!

6. To prevent abusive advertisement, no member shall direct other members, either through direct hotlink or indirectly through comments or other means, to any live e-Bay auctions or other auction sites.

Wow!! I bet a razor that size requires quite a bit of product! And you mind telling me how you apply "zero" pressure?!

Think of how hard it was for Frodo to get ONE ring, then double that.

Someone gave it to him. That wasn't a difficult acquisition. ;)
I was thinking the same thing. The task of getting rid of the ring was a lot more difficult than procurement.

It seems I never even see them for sale any more.

The thing to do is to keep your eyes peeled.

Glide through antique stores and flea markets as you get the opportunity. Not everyone selling old stuff (or old razors) knows that the double-ring is rare. We've seen a number of double-rings here that people just found along with other, more common razors at an antique store.

Also, when you see razor lots on the 'bay, use a keen eye. It doesn't happen all the time, but every now and again you'll see lots with a bunch of cheap gems and superspeeds and kronas and other common (sometimes grimy) razors, but these can occasionally contain rarities like a double ring.

Sometimes you can have good luck just looking for "black" razors... that is, tarnished silver ones. Most of the time, these will be single-rings, but you may happen upon a double-ring. You may also see a cruddy-looking case that's beat up and half-destroyed, and the razor inside may look pretty ratty, but these can sometimes be the double-ring you seek, though they might be overlooked because they appear so tatty.

Finally, you might find one for cheap as an ebay BIN, offered up by someone that doesn't appreciate its rarity, or maybe down-priced because of some old blade rust or a bent corner tooth.

Yes, they're rare, and most of the ones that show up all by themselves on the 'bay are going to be bid in a competitive manner, but if you want one, you can get one cheaper, but it means working for it and spending the time.

For my part, I've completely given up on getting one, not because I don't want one, but given the amount of effort involved, and the fact that I already have a range of different old types, it doesn't bring much to my collection other than being rare, and I'd rather have another Apollo or LeCoq or something more obscure, instead.

Hope it helps,
