What's new

How are the New shows this TV Season?

We're two weeks into the New TV Season ... have you seen any shows worth talking about?

I'm mainly interested in shows that are premiering this fall .. but we can also talk about those returning for another season.

One that I really like is "Outlaw" with Jimmy Smits ... he steps down from the Supreme Court to take a job as a Defense Attorney, taking in on cases that seem impossible to win, and emerges with a victorious verdict for his clients. Two shows so far, and they've both been very, very good.

One show that's been a disappointment is "Swamp People" on The History Channel. This is about Cajun alligator hunters. I've seen about four episodes, and its been boring me right from the beginning. But for some odd reason, I keep watching it, in a vain hope it will get better. And I'm let down every time.

"The Office" opened with a bang ... I really like the new concept where Dwight owns the building, and Jim plays daily tenant/landlord practical jokes on him. And with Michael hiring his nephew as an intern, it was a perfect set-up for some hilarious situations.

Shattered, starring Callum-Keith Rennie of BSG fame, is really good. Though admittedly, I am a huge fan of Rennie (he was great in Due South and Galactica).

You can't beat a cop with multiple personality disorder who kicks the @#$* out of suspects. Though I hear that's common in Vancouver....:001_tt2:.

I'm so glad Dexter is back, but I'm not looking forward the having the anxiety and despair that comes every time an episode ends. It's so good that I can't turn off that "it's just a movie/tv show" switch, and I it always gets me riled up. At the end of last season I literally screamed at my TV just before leaving my mouth agape for like 20 minutes straight in disbelief. This next season already feels like it's cranking up to be really good.

I didn't care for the season opener of The Office. I've been losing interest in it over the last few years.

Anybody watch The Event? I recorded it on the DVR but haven't watched it yet, wondering if it's any good. Same for Blue Bloods, my dad watched it and said it was good.

I thought the Event was trying to be too "Lost-ish". The constant "here's what happened, we'll spend the next 10 minutes showing you how it came about" was totally unnecessary and just made things confusing. They should have done it for the opening scene to get people's attention and that is it. The writers are clearly worried that people aren't going to watch things form to see the cool parts, so they show them first. It just really grated on me. When lost did this stuff it was interesting and spread over the course of the season so you really got to see things forming and happening. This just feels gimmicky.

I watched Chase instead of Hawaii Five Oh, which was just a big mistake. The very first episode of the series and it's a generic criminal of the week episode. Didn't really learn anything about any of the characters except that the woman has a difficult past and the rookie messes up a lot. Never seen that before.

Thankfully they reshowed Hawaii Five Oh and my DVR picked it up. Pretty enjoyable.

I'm watching Nikita and I like it so far. Some reviewers are criticizing it's "sexiness" but she's supposed to be a femme fatale and the only real skin showing part was the first scene of the pilot episode. Everything else has been some good spy fiction.

Other than that, my usual fall shows (How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang, Castle) were all great.

I saw the Event and went ok:confused1
I watched $h*! My Dad Says and went much better. Maybe I needed a mental break, but I thought it was funny.
The recent "The Colony" is not as good as the previous one.

I haven't gotten to watch too many new shows, but I think "Terriers" on FX is great. It has a Big Lebowski vibe to it, i.e. a noirish story filtered through shaggy lenses. Plus the pedigree is very good; the two main guys behind it are Ted Griffin (writer of the Oceans 11 remake) and Shawn Ryan (creator of The Shield).

There's an overarching story, but they seem to be focusing on standalone stories, so its pretty easy to get into. With that show, Sons of Anarchy, Louie, Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, FX is, pound for pound, as good as any out there right now.

I don't have cable but i'm looking forward to Dexter and The Walking Dead tv shows

Yes! The Walking Dead is what I'm looking forward to as well. The preview looked so good, the author of the comic seems really happy about how it's turning out, which is always a good sign.

Only new stuff I've seen is Boardwalk empire, which I really liked. Watching an episode of lone star now and it seems decent as well.

I like Lone Star too. I thought it would be a Texas thing but I'm glad it appeals to you.

I was astounded at how indepth the show got. it seemed like every scene was groundbreaking.

to be fair, i've spent quite a bit of time in Ft Worth, however i don't think Lone Star had too much of a Texas pride vibe, i thought it added a good dynamic, location and depth.
