Hot towel shave at Taylors

Is the birthday present I have got for my friend in July.

Its a surprise for now, but will let him know closer to the time.

Hopefully he will be able to remember every step so that I can carry out my own version.

Anyone here had one at any of the three T's?

Its all booked up now.

I will post back here after 6th July (his birthday) with the steps Taylors carried out for the shave.

Promise!

Looking forward to reading all about it, especially since I'll likely never get the chance to try it for myself.

Great gift!

I did at Taylor's about four years ago. Fantastic experience. I'd been off the plane for about three hours and was very close to dozing off in the chair. I don't remember the barbers name but she was very kind and gave me several suggestions for restaurants and places to see while in the city.

He had the shave today, what follows is exactly what happened:

1) The chair was reclined almost horizontal
2) A fairly thin hot towel was laid on his neck and crossed over either side of the nose so he could easily breathe for 1 minute
3) During this time the barber pressed it into all areas of the face, forehead and beard until the towel had lost its heat
4) The barber walked out from behind the curtain with a small warm but not hot badger brush that my friend said had really bloomed due to much use and dipped it into Taylors Sandalwood cream
5) Face lathered for about 1 minute, using left-to-right strokes NOT circular motions, dabbed his fingers on the brush and wiped some cream across the top lip
6) Shaved going WITH the grain using a shavette with a new blade
7) Another hot towel this time covering the whole face, forehead and neck, this time my friend said it covered his nose and was more difficult to breathe
8) Removed towel and applied a honey moisturising cream
9) Asked if he wanted any aftershave
10) Put aftershave into palm and rubbed hands together, then massaged aftershave into the shaved face and neck areas

This took all of 20 minutes.

The end result is what counts . . . was it BBS? DFS? As good or better than he can do himself?

(I know, I'm pathetic . . . living through the shaves of others.)

I visited Taylors when I was in London just before Christmas. Much smaller place than I imagined - as I recall there were just a couple of barber's chairs in the back.

My barber shave was however done by Turkish barber in Ted Baker's near St Paul's. The process was similar to that described except he finished off by singing my cheeks and ears with a flame and a very vigorous facial and upper body massage! That one pass with shavette was interesting - the areas I can shave well on my own, my cheeks, were not especially smooth but the areas I have trouble with, like the edge and corners of my chin, were like glass! Went out into the world feeling thoroughly pampered like I'd never been before and I think that's what counts.
