One hint I have from personal experience is that it's very easy to put more pressure on the heel than the toe, resulting in the toe half of the edge not getting honed properly. I found I had to "lift" the scale end a little to get a bevel set.
And it takes a LONG time to get a GD bevel set -- the steel is rather thick and quite hard. The factory "bevel" isn't very close to what you will end up with either. I ended up using a diamond plate as my King Deluxe 300 is "glazed" and I don't yet have the 60 grit SC I need to fix it. Took a long time even on a diamond plate, but I now have several that appear to be ready to actually hone now.
