Honestly, Whats the CLOSEST shave?

Hey guys,
So I'm about 3 weeks into wet shaving, and I love it, I will never go back to cartridges. Im using a SE and my shaves are getting better, but i'm still not back to where i was with a fusion, from what I understand if i keep practicing I will be getting BBS shaves in no time. But lets be honest here, Im not asking whats a better shave, without a doubt a DE or SE is better for your skin, thus producing what most of call a better shave, but whats really closer? Does a Fusion ProGlide for instance provide a "closer" not better shave than a DE. Honest?

Thanks

What im saying is that Im not getting a BBS, Im asking whats closer a fusion ProGlide or a DE?

With Fusion: shave 6:30AM, BBS. 5 o'clock shadow. If I go out in the evening, I have to re-shave. Ingrowns.

With R 41 or R 89: shave 6:30AM, BBS. 00:00, still BBS or at least very DFS. Next day: from DFS to socially acceptable. 5 o'clock shadow at last. No ingrowns.

Both 3 or 4 pass shaves, depending on day. I don't know the reason, but DE gives an irritation free, longer lasting, closer shave. The ultimate reason I left Fusion for headshaving only.

DE is, simply, better in every possible way.

+3. Well said. I use a 37C Merkur slant with feather blades and get similar results.

Never really got true BBS from a cart. I get it from both a DE and now a straight. I mean, true, clean, smooth BBS. Recently while travelling I had to use a Mach III. Could not get nearly as close a shave as I did with my usual tools.

Depends. For me, DE shave lasts longer and is more worry-free than straight. Both beat Fusion easily. It's just ~15 minutes with a DE and ~25 with a straight - so my straight is currently just my occasional weekend shaver. Aesthetically, I like both. I'd like to try a SE, but I haven't yet found the one that pleases my eye.

Fusion, for sure, never did and I'm on a mission to eliminate disposable ugliness from my life.

I second the mission

nice one!

I used to shave with a Gillette 5-blade cartridge. Loved the extreme closeness I was getting when shaving against the grain with that razor (my skin allows me to shave that way).

When switching to DE, I have to shave with the grain, thus getting a less BBS shave than I had with a 5-blade Fusion. But I am finding that going against the grain works if you go really slow and gentle, with a brand new blade. After two shaves, the blade gets dull and you need to change it in order to get closeness again.

However, having developed my technique, I can now get BBS shaves even when shaving with the grain. Maybe my beard and skin have gotten used to that kind of shaving, and my whiskers got softer since not getting cut against their grain.

Its maybe just a question of technique mate. Just give yourself some time, you will get close shaves for sure eventually. Also, I know it may sound obvious, but make sure to change your blade often so you are not shaving with a dull one.

I agree with the slower hair grow back, but I changed so much technique at once I can't give all the credit to the razor. Proper shaving technique will take you far, regardless of blade choice. I use DE's, SE's and straights and all are capable of producing a great result (though with straights I still struggle for BBS, my fault not theirs).

In conclusion, I think they all get equally close; once you hit skin there isn't any further I want to go.

If I do a proper shave (not a quicky) I get BBS in 2 passes (chin takes a little more work) with a DE. BBS means when you run your fingers over your face in any direction you don't feel any hairs. Could I get the same result form a M3 or fusion? Sure I could. But I don't use them any more because I no longer like them.

You CAN get a close shave from a DE, SR or a Fusion. But you have to ask yourself what are you going to use? DE and SR shaving takes a while to learn (changing old habbits) but in the end I prefer it over using a disposable for many reasons.

As has already been said, one can achieve BBS results with any type of razor/blade system, provided proper preparation and technique is used. However, I consistently achieve the best results, both in closeness and longevity, from a Feather Artist Club SS straight razor, using either Feather Professional or KAI Captain Mild disposable blades. There is nothing on the market even approaching the sharpness of these blades (even a well-honed standard straight).
