What's new

Holy Fatboy! Mint Old Type! Shaving mug and moreeee - all for under $40!

Sundays are now my favorite day. Flea markets and tag sales once disgusted me; now, I am in love.

I hit these razors with a couple hour soaks in boiling water / dish soap, scrubbing bubbles + toothbrush, and light polishes with MAAS / old t-shirt.

I am in love with the mug. Warm lather makes a massive difference in the quality of shave. I had no idea. I always used slightly cold lather and even though I did get good shaves, I didn't realize what I was missing out on. In addition, the Old Type shaves beautiful. It's my first open comb and I'm in love. My RAD is going wild. Finding that Old Type for $2 makes me giddy... and a near mint FatBoy for $10 after talking him down... !!!!

Let me paint a picture... with pictures of what just under $40 got me this weekend:

Uh Oh - I can see the addiction spreading like a virus. Welcome to the RAD club and I sense a future collector. (Don't buy anymore Rolls they are in mass quantities in the wild and you won't use it) :wink2: Don't expect to find FB deals like that all the time, must be beginners luck, that was an insane deal.

Really nice finds. I need to get out on the weekends and hit some antique shops/flea markets. I've been out 2 Saturday's in the last 5 weeks to just antique stores and haven't found anything other than old straight razors or really antique single edge razors in really poor shape, like Auto Strop razors. Not one single vintage Gillette. I don't know if it's the part of the country I'm in (San Antonio) or the fact that I just haven't found the right places yet.

beginners luck! if you only knew how many antique shops I've called, visited in numerous states and people I've talked to! I know that the fatboy was a ridiculous deal. I've been eyeing them on Facebook for months. I've put in a lot of work into finding these suckers, cleaning and researching them.

but I must agree. super lucky on my negotiating ability. that beautiful old type cost me $2 . practically mint. and the super speed too. $3.

all different vendors mind you. not just one uneducated seller :) I guess I have the gift of sales haha.

thanks tho for the feedback ;)

Jeff - be diligent. hit up every tag sale you see and look up flea markets and auctions. be patient and youll strike gold. it's a blast going through antiques, meeting old folks and enjoying the adventure of it all. loving my shaving adventures hah.

I will avoid the Rolls. I tried honing and stroping the blade and though it feels very sharp, it doesn't cut through my hair. what gives?

$5 with instructions, box and really clean. hard to give up.

Great deals and picks, Gent! Not to up you one, but I got a FatBoy a couple weeks ago for only $5. It is not near as pretty as yours though. I do see a lot of the Rolls Razors in the wild. Keep picking hard, Gent!

Nice. What does the outside of the Old Type case look like? I'd say that + the razor was your top find.

yea I was most excited about that old type. $2 and my first OC. I got a wonderful shave out of it tonight with my new hot lather mug.

the fatboy wasn't really high on my desire list. I wasn't going to spend the going rate on a nice one. but it was in super condition. needed very little clean up and the price was right. ill be testing it tomorrow.

I really really wanna learn about straightedge so I can pick up some awesome vintage ones at a cheap price and attempt to hone and strope on my own.

I know that honing your first straight is a major no no but I really don't have the money to pay for a professional service. where can I learn about the most popular straights, brands, etc.

Congrats. Yup , patience and persistence. The Old Type was my first OC and I still like it although with a different handle. Have fun! :thumbup1:
