Help with simple Gillette identification.

Hello all,

Since I was 12 I have used various cartridge razors, then I progressed to electric and then I returned to cartridge. I have now decided that when I shave I want a much closer and longer lasting shave without the irritation. When you can grow a half-decent beard by 15-16...

Anyway, I have decided to move to safety razors.

Would anyone be able to identify this one I am about to have in my possession?

Sorry I haven't got any more pics, cheers.

Hi Gabba
Welcome aboard. Clean her up and away you go. If you look around here you'll find everything you need plus plenty of folks to help.
Cheers

While the case is genuine Gillette, the razor may be one of many eastern block razors manufactured during the 1950's and 1960's. The handle is not of any standard Gillette design. And the head features a curved guard plate which sits flush with the cap like an Old Type, but has thicker outer teeth like a New Improved. But, it is missing the flat guard plate of a New Improved. This was fairly common for manufacturers to use features of early Gillettes whose patents had expired.

Thanks for the info mate! Will get her cleaned up and give it a go. Really didn't cost me much (AU$8) so even if it is a dud or not genuine I will not really be fussed.

Just because a vintage razor isn't a Gillette doesn't mean it isn't going to be a good shaver. Many of the razors made during that period are better than those made today. Please post some pictures when you get it in, especially of any markings that you see on it.

Ah that would explain it! Thanks everyone for the help and info. Will post some info when it arrives but should be a few days... probably Monday at the earliest.

Any ideas what year anyone?

It looks like a british Major razor in a Gillette Tech No44 case:

That's where I have seen that razor before! Some else in Australia found a set like that a few months back. The British Majors are actually made in Australia and have both Australian (62526) and New Zealand (32561) registration numbers.

But that one had a slightly different handle design that looked like this one.

Don't worry; someone will be along soon. The U.S. is waking up.
