What's new

help please!

My first post here and I need advice please!!
My normal attire is jeans/sneakers and t-shirt, On the rare occasion when I need to for biz meetings I have a suit.

SWMBO is dragging me to a wedding and she tells me I have to dress “properly”

I have no idea where to begin.

Do I need a suit ?
I’d prefer a Blazer and pants, but not sure if that would be appropriate?

I don’t want to break the bank as I will probably wear this once every couple of years but I don’t want to pick something off the rack as I will have to hear about it for a long time.

Links to pictures would help me more than descriptions.
Gentlemen please guide me.

What you need to find out is what others will be wearing. "Properly" is going to depend on a number of things: where you live (temperature), the venue of the wedding (church, outdoor, beach), and how formal the wedding is going to be. Without that info, this is a lot of guess work. Do you have an invitation yet; perhaps it says what the dress is. Since your wife apparently knows the couple, ask her to find out or ask her who you can speak with.

Sorry, knew I had missed some info.
Still waiting on the invite,
It’s going to be hot..somewhere in Houston in Aug, hence the reason I was leaning towards a blazer..

The blazer won't be cooler than the suit ... it's just a navy-blue suit jacket with brass buttons. It all boils (Houston afternoon sun ... how very apt a word to use) down to what the suit or blazer is made of.

But for this wedding ... first, find out what the 'dress code' (or at least 'expectations') is going to be. Maybe it's a 'cowboy wedding' (hey, it's Texas after all) and cowboy boots, jeans and a plaid shirt & cowboy hat is all that is needed ... suit'd look silly in that crowd. (Or maybe it IS a "suit wedding" ... gotta find out.)

A blazer it is going to be, I am thinking navy blue blazer, black shirt khaki pants and black shoes.. if anyone else has any other ideas please feel free..I need all the help I can get. Any recommended places / brands for the blazer? sizing tips..what to look for .. I have no idea where to start.

i personally wouldn't go with a black shirt. I think a lighter color shirt blue or even white would be better. Any idea on how much your wanting to spend?

I'm trying to avoid white as I'll have a toddler in tow. blue blazer with a light blue shirt sounds good as well..what pants would go with that combo though? and black shoes? Thanks for all the help so far, I'm trying to get it together and avoid swmbo stepping in and taking over.

Navy blazer, lighter shirt, khaki pants, brown shoes and belt. As a rule I never wear navy blue and black together. It's pretty tricky to get that color combo to look "right."

With a navy blue blazer you could wear almost any pant color. The common ones are tan, taupe, brown and olive. With the navy blue and earth tones I would go with a brown/cognac/burgundy shoe. Black I think would clash too much with the earth and blue.

Also, many "light" colored shirts go well with the blue blazer: light - blue, pink, purple, yellow. You could also go with a pattern, tattersail and gingham with a white base or light color base are always kool. Things like that.

You didn't mention if you were going tie or no tie.

EDIT: You could go with grey pants too if you like, but personally I'm just not a fan.

The standard no brainer combo for me for navy blazer would be light blue shirt, light khakis, brown belt, brown shoes. And a tie with some dark blue in it (if I'm wearing tie) Can't really go wrong with that.

I have the shirt/pants/belt and shoes covered. (I am thinking to skip the tie), any recommendations on where to get a blazer I have roughly 5 weeks and custom stitched might not be an option for this one..? Thanks again, the ensemble is coming together.

I would suggest not wearing black shoes with navy and khaki if that is where you landed. As others have suggested, brown shoes are going to be the best look for this combo.

Also, if you want to look a little less business formal - why not a light pink or a navy gingham shirt? both I think would look sharp and avoid looking like you are heading to the office.

As far as an entry level blazer, I have a Tommy Hilfiger from Macy's as well as an Anderson Little (Made in the USA). Both have served me well although I like the styling of the Tommy as it is a bit more contemporary, albeit still classic.

Thanks! I will try macys this weekend. I am reading up on what makes a good fit so I will be a little informed when I go shopping.

Unlined navy hop sack or other lightweight blazer (due to the heat), blue or lavender shirt (as you don't want white -are you definitely bringing the toddler?- and black won't go). Stone or light grey pants. Brown shoes (or some dress shoes are tan with darker polish at the toe). Socks to match the trousers (while you are at Macy's bring the pants (or a swatch) to the sock department.

I've done a Houston wedding in August, and it's not as bad as a wedding on the sun, but pretty close.

The invitation is key to direction. This particular even was informal, so I donned a blue linen blazer (essential IMHO), khaki slacks, white shirt, and yellow bow tie to match my wife's dress. I was not out of place.

Enjoy!

So how's it going vreddy? Did you get everything settled?

Not yet I'm afraid.. I had a bit of a tiff with SWMBO. Almost decided on the tommy Hilfiger jacket, she likes it but wants to do some more shopping, I'll pick one up on july4'th, maybe luck into a sale or something. I did get cole haan brown black shoes. blazer in the next couple of days and perhaps pants as well, still undecided on the pants...

Sounds like your getting started at least. Would love to see a pic of the cole haan and the rest of it when you get it!
