I bought this beauty from RayG. And english, vintage, butterscotch, persian jar shaped shaving brush.
After a month, and an episode with my idiot postman, I thought it was lost for ever and lost all hope of having a nice butterscotch.
Today, it arrived!:w00t:

And it's a beauty!

It had boar bristles, very soft but also very "un-dense"
I cut them, thinking I could pull out the knot (as you can do with many older brushes) but it wouldn't move.
I decided not to re-knot it myself but send it to Shavemac.

The knot is 23-24 mm.

I know you'll say DO1, but I wouldn't like it denser than my Rooney. A 80% rooney density would be great!

So what grade (excluding DO1) and what loft would you recommend? I'd like soft tips. I can't stand prickliness. Is there a Shavemac grade very similar to the rooney "super" grade?
I should stress I'm a face latherer, I'll pull out my bowl about 1 every 2-3 months. So all the options will be shorter lofted.

(next to my rooney 1/1 super)

I voted for the shortest loft and smallest knot.
If it doesn't work out though, I'd love to take that handle off your your hands.
I'd give a bowl if English Fern for it ;)

Now, now! You know nobody lets go of a nice butterscotch brush:wink::biggrin:
I too am going for a 23mm knot. 24 would maybe be a bit too big. I find 22mm to be perfect for me.

23, 47 is my vote in a golden nib finest if they have it. The golden nib finest feels softer than a rooney super. I know this first hand as I had a rooney super and have a heritage and a finest rooney.

I also have this bad boy, thank you heirkb again

I gotta stress one more reason I'm not going with just buying a knot- I want a fan shaped brush, bulb just doesn't suit my lathering style:blush:

If only that brush was a bit smaller. It would have been perfect for me inevery way. On the other hand, I wouldn't have gotten those nice slants ...

Oh yes I am very particular with what I accumulate. I hope you are enjoying them. What did you think of that WWII army slant? Its uber aggressive huh. I still have one

Ooo and I kept feeling bad thinking I had deprived you...geez...
It's an amazing razor by the way. It's pretty damn aggressive for sure

Yeah I am going with 23 x 47 too. I made one in super badger in that size and definately would not want a longer loft....I would like a smaller knot but you have to work with that great old handle.

The brush was mailed to Bernd today. I've decided to go with a 23,, knot, fan shaped 48mm loft in finest, a litle denser if he can manage it.
I can still change my mind, but I'm pretty sure that will be it. Bernd also agrees it will be great for my technique, face lathering that is.

Post pics when it comes home!

I have a one more dilema.
Should I choose a bulb shaped or fan shaped.

3 examples.

Rooney 1/1, 2/1, reknoted muhle pinsel in super (penchetta knot).

I like the shape of the 2 rooney's, but really don't like the bulb shaped muhle.
At first I was thinking of getting a fan shape, but as I am looking at these pictures:

I see that Bernd has a little less bulb shaped brushes.
Mind you, the rooney 1/1 is the only real fan shaped brush I own, and the muhle is the only real bulb shaped bush I own so my experience is limited. But the one thing I know- I dont want a bulb like this

Opinions?

If you're gonna get bulb, in my opinion, it gets no better than an extra stuffed penworks finest, so go with fan since you already shipped it out.

Keep in mind that Bernd's bulby knots (like the one pictured above) are really bulby, like a lightbulb. Unless that's what you're going for, I'd suggest a hybrid fan/bulb or a fan. But either way, that's going to be a marvelous brush! I'm eagerly awaiting pictures.

EDIT: by the way, that picture of the stumpy, sheared brush is horrific. It belongs in a shaving nightmare... He walks into the bathroom, shaking off sleep, and grabs his favorite brush...ahhhhhhhhh!
