Help I have hair.

My questions stem as the title suggestions with having hair. I havnt had anything longer than a week old zero (clippers with no guard) for about two years. Well now I've been able to and decided to grow my hair out I really dont know what to use. I'm looking for both a good shampoo and some product. I'm still going to keep it pretty short, I'm thinking 2-3 inches on top and 1" on the sides, but have no clue who makes a quality shampoo and know my old strategy of using bar soap isnt good for it. As for product I'm probably going to do some cross between Danial Craig (in the James Bond movies) and Rodger Sterling from Mad men, but with preferably less shine. My hair is very thick, very straight, and tends to have very standard growth patterns. Any suggestions are more than welcome.

yes applying soap on hair is not good for them as there is alkalyine in soap which damages the scalp of hair, you can use Garnier FRuctis shampoo for keeping your hair healthy as well as strong and shiny

Can only speak for myself, but I use Pantene 2 in one and American Crew Pomade. Gives me more of a Don Draper hair admittedly, but I think it would work for the Roger Sterling look as well.

I use TreSemme in the big black bottle.... the "deep cleansing" variety because of all the goop I put in it. As for the goop.... I use a combination of American Crew Pomade and American Crew Fiber (or cheaper imitations of either/both by brands like Suave, Trendstarter, etc.). I apply the pomade first to slightly damp/towel dried hair after my shower, style/comb it, and then apply the fiber as a finish and style with my hands. Using the fiber product gives a little more hold with not as much shine and heaviness. I've got a Roger Sterling style.... maybe slightly longer. My hair is thick and I have my barber cut it short enough on the sides and back so that I don't really have to style it... so I'm mostly just styling the top. Sort of a classic taper.

I prefer and would recommend pomades and styling waxes/pastes over your standard hair gels or hairsprays that get hard. The pomades, waxes and pastes can be restyled and are not necessarily greasy or messy if you get the right kind and use the right amount. I went for years using hair gel.... only to find that a pomade was what I needed for the style I was going for. YMMV.

Have to agree about using the artisan shampoo bars. Most liquid shampoos are little more detergent with things added for conditioning. The hand made shampoo bars can be much better on your scalp. Like a truly great aftershave, finding a hair cleanser that works well without drying your scalp is much trickier than finding a great shave soap. I have used Chagrin Valley bars with great success and want to try QED and QCS next. One bit of advise. Keep the hair bars on a well drained soap dish. They tend to be softer than bath soaps and will melt away faster if kept wet.
