What's new

Hello from a new member (have a question)

Hello all. Just wanted to post and introduce that I have made my way to safety razors (not good with my obsession of collecting) Well I decided to switch over after I found my dad’s Gillette safety razor. I believe I found it’s from 1985. I will post pics when I get a chance.
Well I made a impulse purchase on ebay for this item
http://www.ebay.com/itm/350889269606?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Is this a good purchase ..I may have overpaid.

One question I have is, what some must haves for my collection and rotation are.

I was also looking into the Aristocrat. Hope to have a good time here!!

Must haves... a good blade sampler pack. Work your way through it, find a blade that works good for you. Stick with that blade brand for a couple of months while you get your technique down, then revisit the sample pack. Same with soaps/creams. Find something that does at least a passable job, then in a few months when you have your technique down, start trying various different soaps and creams until you are happy. Keep in mind that almost everything in this hobby is subjective. Blades or soaps that work great for me, might not be so good for you. Conversely, things that I just can't work with, some might consider the best of the best.

In regards to "must have" razors... I'd say a 40's Super Speed, a NEW (I prefer long comb), and a tech. Out of the razors I own, those 3 are my favorites (not in that particular order).

Welcome to B&B. I think you did great on that 40's(I think) super speed razor. Once cleaned up you should have a fiine shave. As for what razors to get that's a tough one. Try the "sampler pacK" Red tip, Open comb New, Flare tips, Gillette Rockets Schick injectors, Gem G-bar etc. That's the fun in this hobby of ours is the many razor selections that are out there for you. One may sing for you but not others. Enjoy the journey!

I have a massive collection of vintage razors, and I love all of them for a plethora of reasons...but, I would recommend that you eventually explore a few modern options.

At the top of my list would be the Merkur Futur...it is a fine razor, and I am proud to own/use one. I lean on this razor when I need to shave quickly or if I just want to play it safe with a super comfortable shave.

yep, you did good and Welcome! as for what to try, well this is a ymmv world. Even if you get a razor that's not your cup of coffee , you can put it on b/s/t after you meet the requirements.Explore, experiment, and enjoy!

Welcome! Looks like you got a great deal. And it also seems you are positioning yourself well for the dreaded RAD.

1940's style Super Speed? That is clearly a GEM Micromatic Single Edge. It says so on the box!
Oops! It looks like Mr. Razor agrees with Rx on this one.
BTW, that model Super Speed is an excellent razor. Give it a scrub with water, mild dish soap, and a toothbrush and then put it into action. I suspect you will enjoy using it.

Thank you for all the great info. Glad to be a part of this great community! I can't wait to get my package in the mail and there are a few others I am watching on the bay.

Also this is the one that belonged to my father. Pics included.

Welcome to B&B! Your Dad's razor is a Super Adjustable, or Black Beauty. A good all purpose razor.

Go to Mr. Razor's site for a world of info on any Gillette.

Welcome to B&B. With your family Super Adjustable and now a 40s style Super Speed, I would say you have a great start to explore DE shaving. Many might say either one could be enough to make you a happy camper. As others have suggested a blade sampler pack would be a great next step. The hard part for me at this point was that I wanted to try everything all at once ( and I just about did), but this jumping from razor to razor in the beginning slowed the learning process for me. If you can try to stick with these two for a period of time till you are comfortable with them, then you will have a foundation to build on or have a better idea what direction to go in you next razor choice.

But most important of all, enjoy the journey.
