Hello everyone!
I’ve been lurking around the forums for quite some time now and finally decided to join in the Summer. I’m not new to wet shaving, as I’ve been using DE on/off for around 4 years now. What originally got me into wet shaving was history: I wanted to try how people used to shave back in the day. I rarely use an electric shaver and the Feather F3 cartridge, which I find surprisingly good and comfortable.
Over the course of the last 4 years, I accumulated quite a collection of razors, many of them Merkurs, which I started to sell off last Spring. I felt like there were just too many razors that really didn’t get used that much; maybe I switched between them too often and didn’t really get to know each one that well. Currently I have the Muhle Rocca, the Edwin Jagger 3one6 and Design94’s Aviation94. For travel I have the Feather Popular that, in my humble opinion, is one of the greatest razors of all time.
The Rocca was a Christmas present last year and my first SS razor. I find it very comfortable with a Dorco ST-300(/301) or the German Wilkinsons. The 3one6 I bought during the Summer and found to deliver a superb shave with the Wilkinsons. It shaves similarly to the Rocca so I might be selling it off though. My latest acquisition is – or at least was until today – the Aviation94 by Design94. It is a light aluminium razor that I’ve found to be a good daily shaver when paired with a Wilkinson (usually with the Rocca and 3one6 I shave every other day). It might be a bit pricey for an aluminium razor, but the machining is absolutely fantastic, and it delivers a smooth and efficient shave. As of today morning, I’m also waiting for the Feather AS-D2 to arrive.
As far as brushes are concerned, I’ve been mostly using synthetics. Muhle’s Silvertip Fibre brushes have been my favourites, but I’ve really enjoyed Omega’s S-brush too (I find the price-performance on that little thing to be really good). I also have a couple of Omega’s bristle brushes that I use from time to time but find them personally to be just okay, nothing special. My next big acquisition is probably going to be a brush, although because of the AS-D2 that’s not happening for a while.
At the beginning of my “shaving career” I bought way too many soaps and aftershaves – as I’m sure many of you have at one point or another. This might’ve been one of the reasons why my DE usage was on/off, as there were just too many soaps I did not know how to use correctly and couldn’t get a lather done with – and thus became frustrated with the whole process. I’ve been practicing and have become better at making a good lather. I’ve especially fallen in love with the soaps of the Nordic Shaving Company because they’re easy to lather and have great scents too; the owner is also a very helpful guy, and the customer service has been top notch. If you get a chance to try their soaps, I’d highly recommend!
This turned out to be way longer than I had anticipated, but I hope you enjoyed my post. It’s a pleasure to meet you all, hope your shaves are turning out well!
