Head Shaving tips ?

I must say I am reluctant to whack the hairs off my head with safety razor yet. The problem is the fact that it's not flat and the whole proper angle and everything coming over those curves. I just do not want to feel like I took a cheese grater to my head. Can anyone help , please ?

Use the least aggressive setup you have, and start with just the front and the sides that you can see in the mirror. Then finish up the rest with whatever you normally use. As you get more comfortable try to shave a little more each time with the safety razor. That's what I would do anyway. I don't shave my head, though I do have a lot of customers in the shop that get their head shaved.

Also there is a lot more hairs on your head than your face, so try to get the hair as low as possible with clippers/trimmers/electric shavers before you break out the razor. And stretch the skin as much as possible, it won't move as much as the skin on your face though.

Use some kind of non brush cream such as Cremo. Then, as already suggested use a non aggressive razor. An old Gillette tech works for me.

I started with a Gillette Flare-Tip Rocket. Then I purchased a an open comb - RazoRock Jaws. I have used both the Wilkinson Sword and Lord Platinum blades. I found the Lord blade to be more forgiving and gives a very close shave.

I lather up and then shave down going mostly WTG. Then I apply more lather and then go in different directions, using my fingers to find any stubble.

I find the DE gives a much better shave than the disposables. I am careful not to apply pressure and keep a approximate 30 degree angle.

In my experience, shaving the sides and back was about the same as it always was when I used a cartridge razor. It didn't really give me any problems as long as I followed the same techniques I applied to shaving my face with a DE. I think it's at least in part because there's a little more cushion (aka, fat) underneath that skin and it acts much like the rest of your face.

Once you start to get to the point where your head curves from the sides up to the crown, that skin has much less cushion underneath it and the curvature is increased which can cause awkward contact between the razor and your head. In my opinion this is the point to pay extra attention to using NO PRESSURE. Also try not to worrying as much about WTG, XTG, ATG...shave in a comfortable and controllable direction.

Having said all of this, don't over think it. Go slow, use proper prep and technique. It'll take practice, you'll make mistakes, you'll keep going and you'll get better. Many of us here shave our heads with a DE and if we can do it, you can do it!

Agreed on the Tech - I use a post-war Tech which hasn't nicked me yet.

Agreed.

In short - trim as much as possible with clippers, then shave your head with a Gillette Tech (use a grippy handle!). I go by feel for the most part. I have shaved in the shower and in front of the mirror - different experiences, both worth trying. But use the clippers in the shower for ease of cleanup. Plus, a quick shower counts as my scalp hair prep time.
