What's new

Has anyone ever seen something like this?

My dad brought this to me today. He said it may have been a wedding present for him and my mom over 38 years ago. There getting divorced now so it's kind of like what ever they don't want there bringing it to me for some reason. Anywho, I don't think it's silver, it hs no markings on it what so ever except Made In India on bottom of the Chalice looking cups and it appears to be hand ingraved because the marking aren't the same on any of the items. Since we have some older guys on here I thought maybe someone has seen one before. If it's jnk I was thinking of converting the box into a storage box for my straights.

Indian silver is not always marked, and it is not always of the same grade, like sterling (.925). In many cases, things were made from old things of varying percent, or from coins so the finess of the content was not standardized.

However, it looks like a cordial set and not probably an item made for the indian market. In ortherwords, export , silverplate.

With silver at $23 an ounce, you might want to go to a pawnshop and have them test it.

Even if it isn't a treasure of major value it certainly isn't junk. It is an interesting set and it would be a shame to mess it up.

P.S. My guess is silver plated brass. India is big on brass.

Maybe for sherry or port? if it was me, I wouldn't convert it to a razor box. It might be valuable; if not, it's at least an interesting set. Polish 'em up and keep them. You might have an occasion to use them someday.

I had thought of this too. God knows i can use some practice with the MAAS the the Dremel. Maybe i will break out the polishing pads for this. Thanks guys.

I was given a set of four similar to these when leaving a company about 28 years ago. Mine were somewhat larger vessels and there was no tray. I'm pretty sure they were lightly silver plated over a 'flash' of copper. They had the characteristic 'coppery smell' associated with low grade plate and were highly susceptible to finger print marking. The box was very similar in colour and materials.
